Mission: Austin Sunshine Camps (ASC) teaches children life skills, self confidence, trust and teamwork, and provides disadvantaged students mentoring and academic guidance throughout the year. ASC''s goal is to stem the cycle of poverty and related social ills among Central Texas youth by promoting education and raising high school completion rates. Sunshine Camps strives to reach its goal by educating, teaching leadership skills to, and providing academic guidance and mentoring for Austin area youth through the Sunshine Camps, Sunrise Leadership Program, and Sunrise Challenge Program. Austin Sunshine Camps mission statement: "To provide deserving children of Austin, and of the surrounding areas, with programs that provide them opportunities for personal development, necessary skills in order to succeed in school as well as in life, and the hope for a better future."
Programs: Created in 1993, the Sunrise Leadership Program brings approximately 30 select high school students together throughout the academic year for workshops and course-based tutoring. Leadership sessions teach core subjects such as math, science, English and history, as well as study skills, test-taking strategies, and short- and long-term goal-setting including college and career planning. Sessions are staffed by accredited teachers and volunteers. One of the most significant results of tutoring for most students is the positive impact of the mentor/mentee relationships developed during the ASC Leadership Program. In addition to the mentoring and tutoring opportunities offered by the Leadership Program, students are given the chance to qualify for the Junior Counselor Program, which is steeped in service learning projects to impart the much needed idea of giving back to the community. Junior Counselors work at the camps over the summer, act as role models for camp participants, and establish their first job experience, as well as receive other valuable training including CPR, First Aid, and conflict resolution.
