Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Museums

Mission: The mission of the Augusta Jewish Museum is to reclaim and restore the original Congregation Children of Israel Synagogue, the oldest standing synagogue in Georgia, and re-purpose it as a Museum and Center for Education. The adjacent historic Court of Ordinary which is an early fireproof building in GA once preserved Richmond County’s records. Now, as part of the new Augusta Jewish Museum, it will collect, preserve and interpret the rich evidence of the Jewish experience in Augusta, GA, Aiken, SC and the rest of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) and will educate, challenge and inspire audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our four pillars of education are: Jewish contributions to the CSRA, Jewish Heritage and Traditions, Remembering the Holocaust, and Israel - the Land of Milk and Honey.

Target demographics: educate the community at large about CSRA Jewish contributions, Jewish Traditions, Remember the Holocaust, and Israel - the Land of Milk and Honey.

Geographic areas served: The Augusta GA/Aiken SC area (CSRA)

Programs: To restore the original Congregation Children of Israel building and set it up as a Jewish museum. The building was built in 1869 and is the oldest standing synagogue building in the State of Georgia. It is of Greek gothic design. The Court of Ordinary is one of the first fireproof buildings in Georgia and built in 1860.

I have been the CEO, Treasurer and/or Curator of five different nonprofits and museums throughout the Augusta, GA area, and this is as fine as any of those. The men and women on this Board and its Directors and officers are as good as they come. I expect great things when this group begins operating this museum. What an asset!

I am a retired CPA and operate the Thomson - McDuffie Museum as a volunteer. My Board happily agreed that I should donate a little of my personal time and energy in helping in my small way to get the Augusta Jewish Museum up and running. I have attended my first Board meeting of the AJM and am thoroughly delighted at the quality of the other Board members. I have examined the Court of Ordinary building and the old Temple next to it. These two buildings will house a fine museum educating and entertaining Augustans and out-of-town visitors about the heritge of the Jewish people of the CSRA and Carolina. Lewis Smith

Augusta Jewish Museum is being established as a CSRA Regional Center of Learning and Understanding for All in the Augusta GA/Aiken SC area. When we learn that we all have the same hearts and same color blood and can work together for the good of humanity, then good deeds are done. I applaud AJM for involving the elders who tell the stories to the youth so that they may know and remember their heritage. Come visit our pillars of education, great programming, and Museum Store when we open in 2021. Visit www.augustajewishmuseum.org/virtual-museum to take an online preview of what's to come!
