Mission: AWU is a 501(c)(3)corporation originally chartered in 1959 by 20 research universities for the enhancement of quality education and the advancement of scientific knowledge. Today, 62 colleges and universities are members. Membership primarily consists of academic institutions in the western US, however, AWU has a nationwide impact serving 800 colleges and universities and 1900 high schools from all 50 states and US territories. Over 42,000 individuals have been given scholarship, fellowship, or internship opportunities through AWU programs. AWU is recognized in academic and government scientific R&D circles as a quality provider of research fellowships and scholarships located at state of the art campus, government, and industrial research facilities.
