Like Cheryl, I have been involved in Assistance League Pasadena for a long time. What I like best is that it is a "hands on" organization. When I volunteer at the Assistance League Thrift Store, I am busy all the time....unpacking, pricing and displaying items, and helping customers. All the money earned at the Thrift Store is going to support our philanthropic programs and it is also helping our store customers buy needed items that they could not normally purchase.
Our Operation School Bell is sure "hands on". Some mornings, we have over 60 low-income elementary school children at our facility being outfitted with polo shirts, school pants, undergarments, and a jacket. Wow, these kids are so excited to get new school clothing. The bonus is a brand new book that they get to pick out themselves.
I've worked with Assistance League of Pasadena for over 15 years. These people are honest and hard-working. This organization is no social club! We invest our time and money to help the Pasadena/Altadena community. Our current programs include OSB (clothing 1300+ kids a year), Craft Fair (showcasing arts and crafts that are hand-made by 200+ seniors each year), ASK (helping survivors of assault), Bear Hugs (comforting abused and traumatized kids) and VIP (recognizing middle-schoolers to encorage them to stay in school). We also run Treasure Fair Thrift Shop to raise funds for these programs! The Board is thoughtful, professional and foward-thinking. We do a tremendous amount of good!
A fantastic shop where men and women over the age of 50 can sell their hand made items. The shop is run by volunteers and there are over 150 different exhibitors so there is plenty of merchandise to choose from. I love staffing because the everyone is friendly and appreciative. It is hard to staff and not buy something.
Review from Guidestar
I am fortunate to to work with dedicated and hard working women who donate their time to The Assistance League of Pasadena. The Treasure Fair Thrift Shop is organized and has something for everyone from furniture to clothing to electric scooters and everything inbetween. Regular customers visit weekly (some each day) to discover new treasures. Each purchase benefits the underpriviledged school children of Pasadena.
I have devoted all of my volunteer time to Assistance League of Pasadena since 1995. Beyond Board positions I have participated at all levels- helping with our five philanthropic programs, staffing at our thrift shop, as well as fundraising. Our motto is somewhat old-fashioned- 'Caring and Commitment in Action' but it does describe the reason I have gotten so much satisfaction from my involvement in Assistance League of Pasadena these past 18 years.
