This is an exceptional non-profit! The volunteer members work tirelessly to support the varied philanthropic programs and their Thrift Shop is a joy to visit. You can find high-end clothing, housewares, and furniture at bargain prices, and the staff of volunteers serving you is always friendly and helpful. The facility and property is well kept and, with the recent addition of the mural on the Commonwealth side, brings a bit of art to the neighborhood. Mission: Assistance league of Houston is a chartered chapter of National Assistance League that provides various forms of assistance, including but not limited to clothing, shoes, financial assistance, food and gifts primarily to children in need in schools and hospitals in the greater Houston area.
Programs: Operation School Bell is a program that provides school uniforms to economically disadvantaged school children. The program strives to not only clothe the children, but also make it possible for them to attend school appropriately dressed, to try to boost each child's self confidence, school attendance and classroom performance.
The organization's scholarship program awards annual scholarships to students in participating schools who have financial need, including some with physical and learning disabilities, and who have demonstrated scholastic achievement. The scholarships are intended to encourage committed students to pursue their educations through high school and on to the post-high-school level.
Assistance League of Houston holds a holiday party every December at Texas Children's Hospital to present gift cards for food, clothing and other items to patients and their families. Families are sponsored by Assistance League of Houston members, local businesses and individual donors.
