Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education, Educational Services, Student Services

Mission: The ASPIRA movement started in New York City in 1961. It grew out of the need of Puerto Rican and other Latino children to have a sense of "ownership" and "belonging" in their new school environment. ASPIRA of New Jersey was founded in Newark in 1968 by a group of educators who admired the success of the ASPIRA project in New York. ASPIRA's programs have always included the motto "Leadership through education". The organization's only mission is to assist young students to ensure they stay and succeed in school. During the last 32 years, more than 40,000 "Aspirantes" have graduated from high school and more than 90% have gone on to some form of post secondary education. During the last year, ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey has also launched a major technology initiative after winning a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the establishment of five community technology centers. Our organization is also an experienced operator of regional and national conferences and currently runs on a yearly basis, the Latino Education Conference in Atlantic City, NJ, the Youth Leadership Convocation and the Technology in Education Conference.
