Mission: AIDA empowers citizens to protect human health and the environment by enforcing and developing national and international environmental laws and mechanisms for citizen participation. We aim to protect important biodiversity, shared resources, and human rights, and to ensure that international policies, laws and financial flows contribute to rather than compromise environmental protection. AIDA was formed by national environmental law organizations seeking to more effectively address trans-border environmental problems and develop the international strategies and solutions that will safeguard our shared environment in a rapidly globalizing economy.
Programs: AIDA's projects are divided among two program areas: Human Rights and the Environment and Biodiversity and Critical Natural Ecosystems. While AIDA addresses diverse environmental issues with varied strategies, certain threads run through the work. Primarily, we capitalize on the expertise and possibilities for cooperation available in AIDA by "internationalizing" strategies or working toward precedents that will have regional impact. We try to be proactive and strategic, to not only work toward case-specific goals but rather use our casework to develop systems for citizen participation and public policies that have permanent and far-reaching impact. We also take actions intended to set examples and establish models that can be replicated throughout the Americas. AIDA has a special focus on the development of international law and institutions. By promoting and using promising international mechanisms and opportunities for citizen participation, AIDA helps create critical supplements to the tools that exist under national legal regimes.
