Mission: Aaaj-alc provides high-quality, free or low-cost legal services on issues such as housing, employment, immigration including naturalization, family petitions & deportation defense. We also advocate for policies that advance the rights of immigrants & their families.
Programs: Civil rights - the civil rights program focuses on the elimination of racial, ethnic, and religious profiling by law enforcement. We served more than 250 clients over the course of the year on issues such as customs & border protection and other federal law enforcement questioning. The program also utilizes freedom of information act litigation to increase government transparency in its practices. Community education, coalition-building, and policy advocacy are also key features of this line of work.
immigration - our immigrant rights program focuses on providing high-quality direct legal representation on a range of areas including naturalization, adjustment of status, family petitions, and deportation defense. We served over 535 clients over the course of the year through direct legal services including representation, advice/counsel, and referrals. The program's other key components are strategic impact litigation, youth organizing, community education, and policy advocacy.
employment and labor - our employment and labor program focuses on the issues facing low-income immigrant workers including discrimination, wage and hours disputes, work place safety, and wrongful termination. We advocate for stronger regulatory oversight for this workforce and promote worker leadership to actively participate in improving their conditions of employment.
