Mission: The Arthritis Foundation, Metropolitan Washington Chapter''s mission is to improve lives though leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases. The Metropolitan Washington Chapter was founded in 1948 by a small group of dedicated physicians who wanted to help people with arthritis that had nowhere else to turn. At the time, little was known about arthritis, few treatment options existed and people lacked resources to help them manage this disabling disease. Over the past 50 years, the Arthritis Foundation has served as a leader in the fight to prevent, control and cure this leading cause of disability in the nation. Through ongoing support of people with arthritis and funding of crucial research, people now have better treatment options and resources to help them take control of their disease. The Arthritis Foundation is the largest private funder of arthritis research in the nation. Arthritis is not just the general aches and pains of old age; arthritis affects people of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom suffer from debilitating chronic pain and joint damage. Approximately two-thirds of people with arthritis are younger than age 65; additionally, arthritis affects one of every two people over 65 years of age. Over 46 million Americans suffer from one of the many forms of arthritis - 1 in 4 people in our community. Some of the more prevalent forms of arthritis include juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, affecting children as young as 2 years old, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.
Programs: The Arthritis Foundation provides services such as physician referrals, exercise classes, support groups, community education and prevention programs and arthritis books, videos and pamphlets to people in need. In addition to the programs and services we provide, 25% of our yearly expenses are dedicated to funding promising research. Over the past 50 years, we have invested over $272 million dollars in important research that has resulted in understanding some of the causes of arthritis and finding better treatments with fewer side effects. It is our mission to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis and lead the way toward a cure for arthritis and its related diseases. We change lives everyday by providing information to people who are newly diagnosed, connecting people with others who can support them, and teaching people how to manage their pain and speak with their doctors. The Arthritis Foundation, Metropolitan Washington Chapter runs programs in over 50 locations throughout the metropolitan Washington area. Arthritis Foundation aquatics and exercise classes are held at YMCA's and recreation centers throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia. We host a 4-part informational speaking forum and a 1-hour forum for church groups, community organizations, schools and many other sites to teach people how to identify and treat arthritis. If you are interested in having an Arthritis Foundation representative speak to your group, please contact our programs department at 202-537-6800.
