Mission: The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases. The Arthritis Foundation is the only volunteer health agency in Michigan providing for education, research and improved treatment for the 100+ forms of arthritis. Through arthritis awareness programs, scientific research, public and professional education, and various other community services, the Arthritis Foundation is the place for Michigan residents to turn for help with arthritis. The first local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation was formed at The University of Michigan in 1948. Today, our mission is as important as ever as we continue to combat the nation''s --and our State''s -- #1 cause of disability.
Programs: Arthritis Foundation Quality-of-Life Programs include the Arthritis Self-Help Course (ASHC), a proven self-management program designed to teach skills that can reduce pain, reduce physician visits, and improve the quality of life. The Arthritis Foundation also offers the Arthritis Aquatic Program, a warm-water exercise program designed especially for people with arthritis that helps maintain range of motion and flexibility. A specially-designed, land-based exercise program, People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE), uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and to help maintain muscle strength. The Foundation's Research Program provides funding to help find the cause of, and prevention and cure of all types of rheumatic diseases, as well as improving methods for diagnosis and treatment of people with arthritis. The Arthritis Answers(TM) information and referral service provides information and encouragement to people with arthritis and their families at a toll-free number (1-800-968-3030). The Foundation also maintains a list of Michigan physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, and offers current information on many forms of arthritis and its treatment in pocket-sized booklets for individual use and distribution to people with arthritis.
