I have known choreogrpaher Deborah Slater of Art of the Matter Performance Foundation for over 20 years. Her work is always exciting and thought-provoking, whether she is exploring our reactions to death, the many varieties of love or how we face danger. She combines talk with dance in a wide variety of pieces. She works in collaboration with her dancers and is both teacher and student. She regularly holds previews of new work, asking her audtience to comment and to share their feelings and their thoguhts on a new production. An evening with Deborah Slater Dance Theater is a treat and each productionis talked about for days.

Deborah is a great talent committed to sharing and teaching others. She leaves her ego at the door and focuses on making a difference thru her art. I am always amazed at her ability to take what goes on around her as well as in her life and bring it to the stage in a way that makes sense to others. The fact that she has been able to do this for so many years is astounding!

Deborah Slater's work is transformative for everyone involved - dancers, audience members, volunteers, and everyone willing to participate. She is dedicated to producing work that creates lasting impact by involving multiple constituencies in the process. Her current work exemplifies this idea. In "Private Life," Deborah explores the lives of soldiers (and their families) upon returning to civilian life. To create the piece, Deborah has worked with veterans, nonprofit veterans support groups, and others involved in the arts wold. The final product asks difficult questions, and invites us to have and share a unique experience.
