Mission: Contemporary American visual art makes an important contribution to our national culture, bringing economic and intellectual vitality to our urban centers and national life, yet there is insufficient public understanding of who our artists are, what they do, or how their works participate in a global dialogue concerning larger social and philosophical issues. Since 1997, Art21 has dramatically changed this situation by introducing an ever-growing national, and increasingly international, audience to innovative artists from diverse geographic, ethnic, cultural, and artistic backgrounds.A 501c3 contemporary art organization, Art21 produces the Emmy-nominated PBS Series Art in the Twenty-First Century, as well as books, multimedia and internet-based resources, and public programs presenting artists at work and in their own words. What makes Art21 a bold new endeavor is not only the caliber of the artists featured, but the media in which they are presented. The accessibility of television and the Internet makes it possible to reach an extremely large audience.
Programs: Art21 serves artists, students, teachers and general audiences across the united states and around the world. Art21's flagship project is the peabody award winning primetime television series "art in the twenty-first century" which is broadcast nationally on pbs. In fy13, art21 completed season seven of this series, adding 12 artists to its roster of 100 profiles of today's most iconic visual artists, for a total of 112 artists. In fy11 and fy13, respectively, art21 launched two new documentary series, "new york close up" and "artist to artist". "new york close up", now in its fifth year, was nominated for a webby award in its premiere season. Art21 also produces a series of companion books as well as additional films and videos; two web sites (art21. Org and pbs. Org/art21), an online publication, the art21 magazine (blog. Art21. Org) and social media pages. Art21's education and public programs department creates curricular resources for teachers; professional development programs, including a summer institute for educators; and live events.
