Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Arizona Shih Tzu Rescue is a 501(c)3 Non Profit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of Shih Tzu as well as small purebred and mixed breed dogs. We rescue Shih Tzus as well as other small breeds such as Lhasa Apso, Poodles, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Bichon, Schnauzers, and Terriers. We rescue pure as well as mixed breed dogs of all ages...and have been known to take a bigger dog or two....and a few kittens that strangers have dropped off at our doorstep with no where else to go. Many of our rescues are "medical needs" dogs - meaning they come to us in significant medical need as a result of long term abuse and neglect. We believe that somewhere there is a famiy for every dog, but that we have a responsibility to place our dogs into homes that will best meet their needs both physically and emotionally. We look for people with patient and loving hearts and an understanding of the furbaby mind. Abuse, neglect, irresponsible breeding, puppy mills, financial difficulties, changes in family circumstances, births, illness and death of guardians are all contributors to the large population of homeless dogs and some of the reasons we find so many dogs in shelters and rescue groups. Look at all those little faces on our web site and then ask yourself, "Why should I adopt a rescued dog?" We are also committed to educating potential adopters about the importance of ethical, responsible and humane pet guardianship. We have the unique ability to train 'littles' that are deemed untrainable. We also provide grooming services and boarding. We are a Private, Not for Profit 501(c)(3), all Foster and Volunteer based Rescue. We do not have a physical brick and mortar building for you to visit, so we do not have paid Staff. Everything we are able to do is made possible by our volunteers. Volunteers who donate their time to foster, visit, clean, feed, play and/or walk our rescue "kids". We also are able to rescue solely because of the money that comes in the form of Adoption fees and your donations. Our adoption fees and donations go directly back into the rescue. It is with this money that we are able to rescue the next little one that finds him or herself without a home. And for that we are grateful to you.

I can't begin to say how thrilled I am with AZ Shih Tzu and small breed rescue! Two years ago, we adopted our sweet little Shih from them and she has been absolutely the BEST dog I have ever had! Kathy is one of the most dedicated people I know and truly goes the extra mile in the care and love she provides for her fur babies until they can find their forever homes. Several of my friends have had to put their fur babies down and I wanted to do something for their owners. I made a donation to this rescue and they sent out the most beautiful cards! It's nice to know that every dollar donated has gone to help them rescue and find homes for other dogs.I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone wanting a companion....they are the BEST!

I admin a lost/found pet group on Facebook and I'm consistently following other lost/found pet groups. I see lots of rescues on these groups and AZ Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue is one of the few that stands out from the crowd. Everytime there's a small breed in need I see Kathy Hamel and her rescue step up to the plate. I've seen this rescue take on some difficult cases and it's just amazing to me the selfless service, valueable time and effort they provide.

I have been a volunteer for AZ Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue for a few months. Kathy and her other volunteers work tirelessly everyday to repair the broken, love the neglected and train the untrained. I am extremely blown away with Kathy’s knowledge of dogs. I have witnessed many people (which includes other rescuers, friends, and strangers) contact Kathy to get help and if Kathy can help, she will go out of her way to help. She gives so much to the animal community and is very humble. Several of her volunteers have worked with her for years and I believe that says a lot. There is no doubt that Kathy is a true hero for the animals.

I was given an opportunity to volunteer 400 hours at the rescue mission.
As i roll through the hours i put in each month .... I am AMAZED
Of the MAGIC that happens.
Kathy literally is a rare breed herself.
I watch and hear of dogs that are broken, mangled, lost, left behind and dogs that need immediate surgeries. Their furry little souls come from lots of different reasons.
I watch Kathy methodically stay in tune with each dogs physical and emotional needs. Its like watching the pied piper, the dogs follow her. When she says "be quiet," they all stop barking.
Im not sure how she Orchestrates it all. The grounds and kennels are always clean.
Its like MAGIC HAPPENS here.
It takes alot of funds for the carrying of all the animals. The food, bowls, collars, leashes, beds they sleep in, the toys they chew and play with, shots and i cant imagine medical bills.
Kathy Hamel NEVER RUNS OUT OF LOVE, NEVER RUNS OUT OF TIME when it comes to her rescue mission to save lives. The dogs and their new adopted families. ADOPT A RESCUE DOG!
I saw Barkley's picture. He is the sweetest loving dog. Lucky person that takes him home.

I am forever grateful to Kathy Hamel and everyone at Arizona Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue. I was lucky enough to get to adopt a dog named Tuffy and he changed my life. When the rest of the world turned their back on Tuffy, Kathy Hamel gave him the love and kindness he needed to heal. She saved his life and made it possible for him to enjoy his last few years being spoiled by me and my family. After he passed I knew that I wanted to continue opening my heart and home to any dog that needed it. Tuffy has inspired me to adopt many senior aged dogs that have special medical needs. I truly believe that Arizona is lucky to have Kathy and AZ Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue. Keep up the great work!

I lost my shihtzu around a year ago and reached out to this page for help on posting. They were so helpful and they really eased my worry. They got back to me rather quickly and even after posting it, got back to me upon finding possible dogs. They are always posting and helping out and they're a really great page ✨

This is such a special group of people. They give hope to the helpless souls who would otherwise spend the rest of their days suffering or worse. They care deeply and make sure to the best of their ability that these babies go to the very best and loving homes.

I have been doing volunteer work with this rescue for over a year now and I must say it has been the best decision I ever made!! Kathy is such an amazing person and has the worlds largest heart!! I have helped on many occassions and witnessed how everyone within this rescue is excepted as family immediately. Not only does Kathy do anything possible for all animals that go through her doors but she goes above and beyond to help others whenever she can!! If I could give more than 5 stars I would in a heartbeat!!
