Direct beneficiaries per year: over 4,000 Dogs & Cats and over 3,000 Children

Geographic areas served: Arizona

Programs: Our Mission: To create a world where there are no homeless dogs and cats Our Vision: To be the community’s leading source for pet adoptions, veterinary services, volunteer opportunities, humane education and expertise in animal welfare. The Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA) is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona. We are a no-kill shelter in that we do not euthanize animals except for the rare occasions when it is in the best interest of the animal to do so, usually from untreatable medical conditions. AAWL & SPCA is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization, tax ID 23-7149453. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. AAWL & SPCA rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes more than 5,000 dogs and cats that are abandoned or that have been surrendered by their owners. We do this primarily by rescuing them from other shelters in Maricopa County where they are likely to be euthanized due to the lack of time and resources to care for them. At any one time our shelter will hold 140 cats and 190 dogs. We also have a foster parent network of approximately 90 families who provide care and shelter in their homes for puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted, and those animals that are recovering from medical procedures or that need socialization before adoption. All pets offered for adoption have been spayed or neutered; micro-chipped and are current on all vaccinations. Any medical treatments needed, including surgeries, are provided by our medical team and all animals are evaluated by our behavior department. Learn more about our Phoenix veterinary services and animal clinic. AAWL & SPCA not only adopts companion animals into loving homes, we also hold a leadership position in the community in education and animal welfare issues. Please review our Education section to learn about all of our programs (including our school holiday and summer camps) and don't miss our extensive dog and obedience training classes. Background The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) was founded in 1971 by a group of concerned animal lovers. This group was led by Amanda Blake, best known as "Miss Kitty" on the television program, Gunsmoke. Starting out on a small scale, concerned volunteers adopted rescued cats and dogs from foster homes. In the late 1970s, the organization built its first shelter. By the mid 1990s, the AAWL & SPCA began rescuing animals scheduled to be euthanized by the County, and, after rehabilitation, made them available for adoption to the community. Over the past 42 years the organization has grown from adopting a handful of animals each year to a full service animal welfare organization and leader in innovative behavior training, medical care, adoption, education and community outreach programs. Today our shelter has an onsite veterinary clinic, kennels with a separate cattery, a training center and a freestanding infirmary. In 2005, the Arizona Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) merged into AAWL. The new organization was renamed the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA).

We adopted our sweet boy Chewie (on the left) back in 2016 and he has brought so much joy into our lives ever since. He is so smart and affectionate, and loves to play with his brother Bodhi. I am so grateful for Arizona Animal Welfare League for bringing us all together, I cannot imagine my life if they hadn’t.

Adopted my dog Ozzy from AAWL. They were so clean, organized and helpful from the start. They truly care for their animals and want the best for them. Their Facebook posts are so great and stories of pets adopted and happy living in their new homes is lovely. I’ll never adopt anywhere else.

The staff did for us more than we expected! After adopting our puppy they provided us with everything we could possibly need to raise a happy dog. They even helped us with issues we were having three months past the adoption. The training service is outstanding! You can tell they all love what the do and it inspires you.

My family adopted our puppy from here a few weeks ago and we loved the experience. They were super welcoming and encouraged us to bring our other dog to meet the other dogs. They were super happy to let us see the dogs and bring them to the front to meet our other dog. We loved meeting the dogs and our next dog we’re going to adopt from here. Everyone was super kind and playful towards the dogs including our other dog who has anxiety. Love!

Where do I start......I started as a volunteer for AAWL in 2001. I saw first hand how the People who cared so much for this place of Hope that it was able to grow & grow & grow. Then one day 2 kitties adopted me. The support they give with the adoptions is phenomenal. I now support the shelter with donations every Christmas.......it’s the highlight of my year to wear a Santa hat and bring a bag full of goodies off their wish list.

AAWL is an amazing organization! I’ve adopted two dogs from them, was a volunteer, and am now a monthly donor. Everyone I’ve encountered with the organization, whether it was as a prospective pet parent during the adoption process or as a volunteer behind the scenes, was so full of passion and enthusiasm for animals and the community. They are doing the hard but rewarding work of rescuing and rehabilitating animals for adoption while also providing low cost veterinary services and vaccine clinics (pre-covid)- services which I personally drive over half an hour each way to take advantage of. AAWL is truly an upstanding organization and one I’m proud to support.

As a volunteer, I really appreciated AAWL's organization, care for the animals, and their program which made sure every animal received evaluation and attention before offering them for adoption, to make sure the animal was healthy, spayed/neutered, etc! I adopted 2 dogs from AAWL and they made sure the fit was right, even taking extra care to introduce my first dog to the possible second pup at the shelter with play time before making the decision. AAWL is a wonderful and caring shelter!!

We adopted our 2 year old dog, Marilyn, from AAWL when she was 8 weeks old. The staff was kind and knowledgeable, and helped to prepare us for some of the difficulties such a small puppy can bring. We are forever grateful for this organization and their mission to save as navy animals as possible.

I love that AAWL took over the space previously occupied by a puppy mill pet store at our mall. They have had thousands of animals adopted from their mall location since they opened which has saved the lives of many dogs and cats. I also love how innovative they are with their fundraising.

When we lost our dog to a sudden illness, we did not know where to turn when we were ready to adopt our next dog. We are so glad we were referred to Arizona Animal Welfare League. It instantly felt very welcoming from the minute we arrived. Every employee and volunteer we interacted with were friendly, outgoing, and you could feel that were passionate about the animal welfare. The shelter is clean and well organized. After walking the kennels we met Char a cattle dog. After a great one on one meeting in a separate, private, fenced in area we are thrilled that we welcomed Char into our family. We took advantage of AAWL's classes after we adopted Char. They were very helpful to help us help Char with her walking, socialization, and behavior. AAWL is the best shelter experience we have had and would recommend them to anyone. They are a wonderful asset to our community and I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to join their board of directors soon after we welcomed Char into our home.

Do you believe in love at first sight? You will... when you make an appointment at the AAWL to meet some furry friends! Our family made an appointment in July of 2020 because of the AAWL’s COVID protocol’s for cleanliness/sanitation and social distance; we wore masks and were asked to select three special animals to meet during our time before arrival. Our adoption specialist helped us refine our choice of furry friends when we arrived based on the age of our children and our family’s activity level, and we ended up meeting only one of the three initially selected... and two others (three in total). In the end, we rescued a domestic short-haired female named JessicaRae. Our adoption process was informative (a vet tech came and talked to us about the cat’s medical release), easy and a great experience for my kids to be a part of! It’s been a few days since JessicaRae has been home with us, and she loves pets, her special pillow and being around people. We are so happy to have her as part of the family!

In 2013 my husband and I adopted a rescued red heeler-mix momma dog during an adoption event. I was so impressed with the operation that I became a volunteer. AAWL genuinely cares for the health and welfare of its homeless dogs and cats. The humans here offer medical and behavioral assistance in a clean, comfortable and loving safe place until a furever home can be found. There are Educational Programs regarding animals for children. Low cost Vaccine Clinics to assist pet owners. Business and Community based events for animal lovers. And who doesn't love animals, right?

I’ve been volunteering at AAWL for a little more than a year. It has changed my life in so many ways. Being part of an organization that truly loves and cares for their homeless animals is such a gift to me. Cuddling our babies and reading to them is my favorite part of the day. Watching a family adopt a dog and seeing the look in the eyes of the lucky pup is what I live for. I am the lucky one and honored to be a part of this wonderful organization! Sandy

I can't say enough about this wonderful organization. I am a volunteer here, working with the dogs. The care that the staff takes to train its' volunteers is fantastic, they train volunteers in every aspect of animal behavior and safety- to ensure the animals get the best care- the goal here is to keep the animals safe and and well cared for and that we stay safe as well. The kennels are clean, the dogs always have clean blankets-fresh water.... As volunteers, we try to walk every dog every day, and give cuddles at every opportunity. Many of these dogs are fostered, have home stays, go hiking- our goal is to prepare them for a loving family. The facility is "no kill" . There is also amazing medical care for these dogs onsite. There are plenty of play yards to take the dogs to. The dogs have play groups to socialize, and have fun. It is all about the dogs here- my kind of place!! Our goal is to cultivate a great family dog, one that a family will love and cherish.!!

22 years ago I adopted my 1st Furbaby from here......20 years later my life changed and i had time and I wanted to volunteer and went here 1st. The place is amazing. The staff and volunteers really care about the animals, learn their personalities, do playgroups to socialize the dogs and get them up and moving. They get love and attention. The Vt cinic is also great and low cost. Throughout the years several of my pups needed various surgeries and here I was able to afford them and my dogs were very well cared for.

I had a very strong bond with one of my rescues. I couldn’t keep him. After I surrendered him I telephoned where he was awaiting his adoption from Arizona Animal Welfare League.. They were very kind to me, they wrote down his favorite toys, & sent me a cute video of him. He was adopted in a great home a few days later! I am so grateful for this shelter who helped my sweet rescue to his happy home with his installed microchip!!!

I have been an AAWL volunteer for about 3 years & the positive impact it has had on my life is immeasurable.
My husband & I began volunteering shortly after losing our beloved chihuahua, Mijo. We were so sad but when we took our first pup to the yard to play, I saw my husband smile for the first time in 2 months. We were helping a pup in need, but we were healing our souls.

We also like to serve AAWL and the public by working at events such as the monthly low-cost vaccination clinics, Walk to Save Animals, Bark at the Park with the D'backs, Bark Breaks at companies, adoption events at local businesses etc. We enjoy interacting with our animal loving customers, educating them on ways to keep their pets safe & informing them of other AAWL services that would benefit their families & pets. We are serving the public & highlighting an organization that we truly believe in, but we are also enriching our lives by helping others.
The greatest impact AAWL had on my life was when they allowed me to bring Trevor, a pup who needed a break, home with me. My husband, our pup, Lulu, & I spent a week loving on that sweet boy, going on adventures & spoiling him. That renewed, relaxed pup was adopted shortly after he returned to the shelter and I had found a passion & a new purpose for my life. Over the last 1 1/2 years we have welcomed 12 needy pups into our family, given them what they needed to thrive and helped to find the perfect forever homes. Yes, we gave them love, comfort, training, exercise, socialization & sometimes physical therapy. We showed them that the world is not such a scary place & that they will be loved & cared for the rest of their lives - but they gave me so much more. Helping them transform from a sad, scared pup into a happy, confident, balanced pup & placing them in the arms of their forever family feeds my soul and brings me so much joy.
I am grateful to AAWL for the trainings they have provided for me to learn more about animals, for the friendships I have made, and for the opportunity to become a better human being.

I have adopted two cats from AAWL and absolutely love going to visit the other cats in the cattery. The staff and volunteers take such good care of them and give them lots of love. The shelter has an outstanding reputation in the community, as well. Many of my friends have adopted dogs and cats from AAWL and have nothing but positive things to say about this nonprofit. They are doing an extraordinary job helping so many animals.

AAWL has been such an inspiration to me. Being an animal lover myself, I’m so happy that there is such an amazing organization out there that dedicates itself to saving the lives of animals. Just like every living thing on this planet, animals deserve every bit of care and love we can give them. AAWL goes above an beyond to ensure they help as many animals as possible. May god bless them!

We have adopted 3 dogs from AAWL. They are an amazing organization. They are very knowledgeable about each dog in the shelter... What they like, what they don't like, activity level, how their personalities are with other dogs, etc. AAWL makes sure that the adoptees are a match for the adoptors.
Not only do they have adoptions, they also offer low cost vaccines and training classes. AAWL also have camps for the younger generation to get involved with and learn about the dogs, cats and animal ambassadors.
I have only had positive experiencs with AAWL and have recommended then to several friends who have since adopted and had the positive experiencs.

I have worked and volunteered for this exceptional organization. They are a no-kill shelter and most people don’t know it was founded by Amanda Blake. “Miss Kitty” from Gunsmoke. The animals are well take care and they sponsor many events to promote their mission of finding homes for their critters. I especially enjoyed visiting their cat area where the felines are spoiled. We got a small kitten through them years ago. The person who brought in the kitten said her landlord was going to through him in the canal. We brought her home and she lived with us for 18 years before passing a few months ago. We also had a cat that couldn’t put up with our other cats. She was very docile. AAWL found a home for her with an older lady with no other animals. It felt great to find a home for this beautiful Persian cat. Yeah, I’m a cat person.

The staff was amazing. I know the volunteers were amazing as well because of how they cared for our dog. Without workers and volunteers taking care of the shelter animals plenty of them would not be a adoptable. We had a great experience through the process of picking a dog, the meet-and-greet, the follow-up and the adoption.

Back in 2002, I was a volunteer for AAWL. It was there I met Jade, a Lethal White puppy, that was just picked up from county along with her brother. She was born blind and was about the cutest puppy I had ever seen. I called my husband over and we adopted her that day. Because of her special needs, I stopped my volunteer work and dedicated my time to working with our new family member and helping her overcome all the obstacles that being a blind dog presents.
Four years ago, Jade left our world and a big whole in our hearts. It was quite devastating, and the thought of adopting another dog has seemed too overwhelming and sad. However, my love of dogs brought me back to AAWL. A couple of years ago, I went back there as a volunteer and am still there, every week, working with the homeless dogs there. Not only have I loved spending time with all of the dogs that come into the shelter, but I have also made human friends there! We take the dogs out hiking together, spend time working on play groups together, etc. AAWL has had a huge impact on my life and I love the work they do!

I have worked with AAWL for years, and the work they do is incredible. I adopted my girl after she had been treated for Valley Fever and was incredibly shy. I was her foster dad when she was at the shelter, as well as after she was returned for being "too shy". She now comes to work with me every few weeks, makes new friends, and is an absolute love bug. They never gave up on my sweet girl, and for that I am extremely thankful.

Since my first day of volunteering at AAWL my friends; humans and four legged, have enriched my life tenfold.

The dogs and cats take me to another realm, and my everyday concerns fall to the wayside.

It is so rewarding to have an impact on the animals' lives, and to simultaneously have my heart lightened.

AAWL has such a team approach to the care of the animals. Any questions and concerns for the animals are immediately addressed. And, no topic is unimportant.

I consider AAWL a "be all end all" entity that benefits the most vulnerable members of our society.

My dedication at AAWL has been, and continues to be infinitely rewarding.

We do enrichment games, dog training, shy-dog classes, and play groups. Through my volunteering I found our new fur baby to add to our family. AAWL's MD Petcare Clinic has tremendously helped me with three of my senior kitties chronic kidney disease problems. Dr. Bukowy, and her tech staff have been so very helpful and patient, in my learning how to give my cats the on-going quality of life that they deserved, nearing the end of their lives. I have been able to prolong my Lucy (and Missy's) life, although Missy passed away in April. Dr. Almazon was very kind, humane, and compassionate to both Missy and I, at this difficult time. This organization provides high quality, AFFORDABLE veterinary services. They will always receive my vote!!!

This shelter does exceptional work in finding homes for both dogs and cats, as well as offers a low cost clinic. The clinic just helped me with cleaning my 14 year old cat's teeth, and some extractions. They did a great job and the pricing was much more affordable! I adopted one cat there and he was the best cat ever! The staff knows the personalities and can help you make an informed, well-thought out decision in choosing your furever pet. I also signed up to become a volunteer in the dog kennels; I've taken advantage of some of their dog training classes, which are a great asset.

As you can see, I am a BIG fan of this shelter for many good reasons. Please consider voting for them as well. Stop by sometime and scritch a dog or cat's head! They will love you for it! Woof!

We were searching for a new fur baby for our family & we went to an adoption event Arizona Animal Welfare was at, instantly we fell in love with this pup and spent hours with him while the event was going on. Another family was "ahead" of us to see if their dog would get along with the little guy.
We left our name and number with some volunteers hoping we would end up with him & went home. About 20 minutes later a volunteer called to let us know the pup was ours if we still wanted him! OF Course we did!
The amount of love for each of the dogs being adopted is endless, the passion each volunteer had and still has is amazing! We couldn't be happier with the addition to our family & the memory of the adoption day!

I really loved this organization. I have been following the page for over 6 months and knew for sure I would be adopting my cat there. The Chandler location is a really great location. Even though small, the staff was extremely nice and helpful. The cat for me just wasn't there. So I went to the main location in Phoenix and it's amazing HOW much of a difference it was. The staff in the cat adoption section were extremely rude. Or I guess I should say mainly the girl at the adoption desk. So rude, short, snippy And ignorant. She made us feel stupid for asking any questions about the cats. It is an extremely important process to pick out a pet for your family. You need to find the one that works for you. The personalities go hand in hand. And the front desk worker cut us off and barely helped is. I was not happy at all. I know the dog adoption section is great and I've only heard great things but I'm seeing more and more bad reviews on the cat adoption workers. I don't understand what's wrong with asking questions about the pet you are going to bring into your family. It's important to know about health, food, past, behaviors etc. We didn't get much information. We did get her health records but when we asked any questions all we got in response was a short and rude tone, "is there something wrong with the medical records?". Especially adopting a kitten that was under 6 months I wanted to be absolutely sure our family knew how to take care of her and she will be comfortable. I'm still thinking about the day we adopted our cat and wished it would have been a better experience. I would have 100% left if I didn't fall in love with the kitten we adopted. She was truly perfect. But unfortunately I will not be going back unless something is done about the workers. And I really don't want this to stop me or others from adopting potential animals that we can care for and give them a great home and life.

It is hard to choose just one story of how amazing AAWL&SPCA is. The care and attention that each animal receives should be a model for all shelters. At AAWL every staff member and volunteer works to ensure that all animals are healthy, socialized, nourished, and loved. From dog walking to reading in the kennels to classes to improve interaction with animals, AAWL&SPCA sets the standard by which all other shelters should be measured.

After going through a disorganized orientation process at a different shelter, and seeing people get nauseous to the point of getting sick because of the lack of cleanliness and smell, I reached out to AAWL as a volunteer... I had already heard good things.

Their orientation was conveniently organized for a Saturday afternoon. Was straight forward and friendly. When we toured the facility I was amazed at the cleanliness and the nice play areas for the dogs to run around and play with toys and jump in kiddie pools.
This is an adoption facility that has staff and volunteers that are there for one uniting reason, their passion for animals.
After 8 months of volunteering (cuddling with dogs, taking them on walks) I could take it no longer, I had to become a customer. I brought home a big puppy with giant ears just over two years ago.

AAWL is a fantastic organization. They have low cost pet clinics open to the public. Educational events for children. Programs for the sheltered animals where they get a break from the kennels and can go home with designated volunteers for a couple of nights. Fostered and sponsored dogs, and a fantastic staff who always prioritize the animals well being.

Hello. A couple years ago I adopted the best little dog in the world. I already had two border collies but I wanted to adopt. I was looking for a high drive smaller dog. I visited with several dogs that day. When they brought "Moby" now Piper, out to meet me, I knew in my heart that he was mine. Piper is a poodle dachshund cross. He loves to play with his border collies, sleep with his two cats and go on mini "trail rides" in the arena following his horse around. We have participated in two walk a thons that were promoted by the AAWL. They do such a great job and the animals are well taken care of. I just love my lil Piper dog and I love AAWL

Adopting our little 5-month old puppy Cheddar from the AAWL was an excellent experience. The facility in Chandler was clean, the animals were well cared-for and everyone who worked there was friendly. The process of adoption was very thorough--they want to make sure that each animal is a good match so they will be placed in a "forever home"--and we were given extensive information about Cheddar's history. She had a rough start in life, but the AAWL housed her, nursed her back to health, fed her, played with her and gave her lots of love until she was ready for adoption. Now she is over a year old and has been an absolute joy, a happy and healthy member of our family! Thanks, AAWL!

AAWL provided a wonderful experience when we visited to choose two cars for our household. After we had spent time with various cats, an employee helped us choose cats that were right for our home. We were able to "audition" the cats together in a small room to make certain they were comfortable with each other. Our first pairing didn't work well and the employee suggested a few other cats that might get along with the cat my daughter had chosen. We were able to find two cats that became best friends.

The employees are very helpful and the facility is clean, bright and comfortable for visitors and the animals. The animals are very well cared for.

As the owner of Watchdog Pet Care in Phoenix, AZ, I follow the work of many animal rescue groups in Arizona and around the country. I have been following Arizona Animal Welfare League on Facebook for a long time. They consistently post creative, attractive pictures of their adoptable animals. They make the animals very appealing through the backstory of the potential pet. Also, they celebrate the ones who have been adopted. They do such a good job that I always repost their posts, and advise my clients to donate to them and adopt from their shelter. I personally donate to this organization as often as I can.

This organization is amazing! They truly care and are always so kind, warm and friendly. The staff and volunteers are passionate and committed individuals. I adopted a deaf Australian Cattle Dog from AAWL and the experience was incredibly wonderful. The facility is clean, comfortable and the second best thing to a forever home. The pups and kitties get so much love and attention. A fully support AAWL and encourage anyone looking for a rescue to check them out.

We have adopted 3 dogs from AAWL. Upon entering the facility, you can see it is well maintained and the staff are invested. We will adopt from there again when the time is right. We have recommended AAWL to friends and family.

I have sent many people there looking for an animal or turning one in that is lost. They are a non kill shelter and off medical help at a cost that is affordable compared to the neighbor hood vets. I always suggest them on Facebook ..

I LOVE Arizona Animal Welfare League. I am not only a volunteer there, I also got my cat there in 2010. This nonprofit organization has always made me feel real comfortable about being there and even through struggles I have had, they would always check on my health and other things that would sometime s prevent me from going when I wanted to and never made me feel guilty when I could not make it to an event or had to take time off from volunteering. The staff has always been very welcoming. When I adopted my cat from there, it was also a very rewarding experience and things were completely explained very well. I also LOVE that this is a no-kill shelter and that they rescue animals from other shelters where they are in rescue of being killed.

My fiance and I adopted our wonderful cats Tyrael and Olivia from them. On both occassions the staff was knowledgable and able to give us an inside look at the personalities of the cats that we wouldnt have seen on location (cats tend to withdraw in shelters and other high stress situations). The volunteers have always been kind courteous with us. They are always interested in how Tyrael and Olivia are doing when we stop by to pick up toys for them.

Just over a year ago I went to AAWL to look for a second dog. I had very specific needs and had a certain dog that I wanted to meet. Unknowingly, I had chosen a dog with behavioral issues in his previous home. Before AAWL would allow me to meet him, they screened me to ensure I could provide an appropriate forever home. This was huge! They had his best interest in mind! Thankfully, he turned out to be exactly what my family needed. We can't imagine life without him. AAWL truly wants the best for their adoptable pets. They're an amazing group of animal lovers!

I adopted my dog Grover from arizona animal welfare league and had the most amazong experience ever. The staff were so caring and helpful and there were so many amazing dogs to chose from. When I chose my dog I felt extremely confortable knowing what his behavior was like from aawl's behavior exam. I also appreciated being able to take him home for a "sleepover" first to make sure he would be ok with my cat. He has been the perfect addition to our little family and we owe it all to AAWL!

I've adopted two dogs from here over the past 15 years. Both have turned out to be the absolute best dogs I've ever owned. They do a great job ensuring their pets are adoptable and go to the right home.
