Mission: The saint paul almanac is a community project for sharing diverse stories of our city. We support writers, readers, artists and audiences through our annual book, reading series, lowertown reading jams, community editor apprenticeship project, writer's workshops and through our partnership with saint paul public schools.
Programs: The saint paul almanac is a literary organization that aims to appeal to the masses, and lift those voices of the city by publishing a book yearly. This date book includes stories, poetry, artwork, photography, a hand painted map; all dedicated to and documented by citizens of saint paul. We put this book together with an innovative democratic process called the community editor apprenticeship. This is a group of all ages; different educational and writing backgrounds, both nonprofessional and the acclaimed; diverse ethnic demographics. The participants read and discuss submissions during each session, ultimately picking what goes into the book. In 2014 they reviewed 362 submissions. The participants are paid a stipend of $200 after the 14 week process is complete. The saint paul almanac also conducts programming, such as, the lowertown reading jam, soul sounds open mic, a popular weekly platform for budding writers, poets, musicians and members of the rondo community to speak and showcase new work. In 2014, 300 guests came to our book launch party. 13 free readings were presented around the city featuring 82 writers. 2,500 people came to our live readings at free public venues throughout the city. 144 stories and poems were published by 113 writers. We also partner with other organizations and programs to bring light to new writers. The saint paul almanac is always seeking new ways to involve the community and encourage youth to succeed, all by using the art of storytelling.
