Mission: The Aquarius Aquarium Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, (EIN 77-0528762), fosters respect, understanding and conservation of the world's aquatic ecosystems through educational programs, interpretive exhibits and aquarium propagation, spawning and rearing of aquatic species.
Many people do not realize that most of the marine fish and corals they see in public aquariums and pet shops are still taken from the oceans. This is simply not necessary because dozens of fish species and hundreds of corals have already been reproduced successfully in aquariums. Then why is it still happening? In a word: money. It is still less expensive to import animals collected from the wild than to propagate them commercially, even when factoring in substantial losses of life from such practices.
We know we must now seek to reduce and soon eliminate the taking of animals from the oceans and establish a program of captive breeding, but many commercial operations have found that they cannot compete with the low prices of wild-caught. So what is the answer? The not-for-profit Aquarius Aquarium Institute.
