Mission: Apple ridge farm transforms the lives of our community's underserved children and families through engagement in unparalleled educational, cultural and outdoor experiences.
Programs: The academic summer camp is held annually for eight weeks in the summer from june to august. This program offers needy youth the opportunity to obtain reading skills, receive academic enrichment in several subjects, and enjoy a mountain summer camp experience. In 2017, approximately 250 youth, age 6 to 16, from public housing developments and other low income communities in roanoke attended the 29th annual apple ridge farm summer academic camp. The objectives of the camp include reinforcement in reading, language arts and creative writing; improvement of proficiency in written and oral communication skills; instruction in physical education, science and environmental education; healthy lifestyle choices and team sports; and an introduction of college preparation and career focus to middle and high school students. Each camper also participates in the garden project where he or she stewards a plot of land growing vegetables and flowers used by the camp. The summer academic camp is offered at no cost to qualifying campers and their families, 97% of campers attend for free. A parent night is held prior to the end of camp.
ebase usa - blue ridge: with the addition of ebase usa - blue ridge, apple ridge farm's educational iniatives have now gone global. Ebase usa was officially opened in the summer of 2016. It is the only structure of its kind in north america and one of only four such units world-wide. The prepared curriculum for the ebase usa focuses on global renewal, self-sustainablity, and reductoin of the human carbon footprint on earth. Students are able to work within the refurbished antique box car in year round comfort. The ebase is completely off grid and is powered soley by solar and wind power. This state-of-the-art weather and science lab will be linked-online-to other ebase stations around the world thereby creating a global study network that apple ridge farm will be providing campers and local students access to.
the environmental education center at apple ridge farm offers science and nature field trips throughout the region. Since its inception in 1995, over 45,000 student visits have been recorded. The program focuses on developing a direct appreciation of our natural world while teaching and reinforcing the virginia standards of learning.
in 2017 a new program called aspire mindsets began. The aspire mindsets program prepares youth who are junior counselors at our academic summer camp, and those who may be interested, to develop and maintain attitudes and behaviors needed to work more effectively with our summer campers. These young people participate in community service projects, learn about entrepreneurship, volunteer in different capacities and engage in personal development workshops throughout the year to prepare them to be effective junior counselors at apple ridge's academic summer camp.
