Mission: TO SOLVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS HAVING THE GREATEST IMPACT ON THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS.
Results: · Secured a landmark legal settlement in Kentucky with one of the region’s largest coal companies that rectified the false water quality reporting Appalachian Voices had previously uncovered, and sent a strong signal to other coal operators and state regulators; · Vanquished what would have been the largest coal-fired power plant ever built in Virginia when the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative officially stopped seeking permits for the plant; · Testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee on Capitol Hill about the ravages of mountaintop removal on the people and environment of Appalachia; · Organized across Tennessee around the Scenic Vistas Protection Act that led to the first state ever to advance a legislative measure to ban mountaintop removal coal mining; and · Kept the issue of mountaintop removal on the national agenda with our strong presence of staff and hundreds of supporters during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

They keep me informed of the environmental issues that concern me, in particular mountaintop cremoval in areas of West Virginia. The rivers and streams are affected, very close to the wild rivers, the Gauley and New River. Anyone that has been in this area, especially aroung Ansted, is aware of the catastrophic impact it is having on the streams and rivers.
