I’ve been volunteering at the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County in Maryland for about 7 years. The volunteers there are very committed to the cats. Many of us help out by getting small items we can afford. I used to volunteer at another shelter and there wasn’t the passion there as there is.
I have volunteered at Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County(wow no wonder we always shorten it to AWLMC!) for about 6=7 years. I wouldn't do it if I was not happy with the shelter. Sure, some times the volunteers have a difference of opinion but in the end, the shelter ends up being a better place. I buy the supplies(I don't spend my own money, which I appreciate). I also work with the team which is crew, meaning we feed, clean the litter and take some time with the cats who are with us at the time. I like the fact that with a few exceptions, the cats are NOT kept in cages. A few lucky cats roam the house as long as they behave themselves with another cat. this is a great way for potential adopters to see them in a slightly different setting. The adoption counselors do a great job interviewing the potential adopters so we find the best home for the cats. all in all, this is a great place to volunteer
If you are looking for a Cat or Kitten to enter your life - the AWL is the place to start your search. The AWL House is a two story home where the Cats reside in separate rooms, depending upon the number of Cats there may be one or two per room. You will see a large cage in the room as this is where a new Cat spends a few days acclimatizing to their new room. In a few days they are introduced to their Room Mate as they are released and free to roam the entire room. Each room has multiple windows , toys and Cat Trees. The AWl Healthcare Team ensures each Cat is up to-date on immunizations and in excellent health. The AWL Staff cares for each Cat as an individual and various AWL Staff Teams visit with each Cat on a daily basis, feeding, grooming and playing - including weekends in efforts to achieve totally socialization for You. You are free to enter the rooms and interact with the resident Cat(s). The AWL welcomes each visitor and will provide you with a total history of each resident Cat. I encourage you to stop by and see for yourself, there is a Cat waiting to make you a member of his/her family!
Love this organization! We recently adopted our kitten from this rescue. We had no issues and they made the whole process very easy for us. I will gladly go with them again next time we decide to add to our menagerie.
I cannot say enough about AWLMC and the people who worked with me to find not just one kitty but then a playmate for her. Bridget was my first cat from AWLMC and she was quite a handful. Volunteer Jacki and I worked together to find ways to acclimate Bridget to her new home. We thought that she needed a playmate but it had to be a specific personality for it to work. Jacki found the perfect cat, a tuxedo named "Bogart." After introducing him to Bridget, it was love-at-first-sight. The volunteers at this amazing organization go more than the extra mile to not only care for their sweet cats while they are with them, but also to stay in touch with people like me who appreciate follow-up. Jacki and I stay in touch even now with updates from me of my thankfulness for AWLMC and for her. If anyone is looking for a cat, please adopt from AWLMC.
Loved my first adoption here! They were easy to talk to, clear about the application process and what is expected of me as a new pet parent. So happy I turned to them when I was emotionally ready to adopt again.
I have visited and met all of the kitties that reside at the shelter. The shelter is awesome. clean and clearly dedicated to the residents. I met many of the volunteers and they love what they do and take such good care of each and every four baby there and the adoption. Rate is very high. I have 1 kitties but if the time comes that I want another this is where I will go.
Great organization. Take good care of cats. Cats are free to roam, play, sleep. Volunteers see to the cats' every need.
I am proud to rate AWLMC. The cats they shelter and put up for adoption are lovable and healthy, well taken care of. My foster cat Don Juan is a sweet boy and will soon be available to adopt. People are welcome to visit AWLMC at 12 Park Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD and see what a cage-free no-kill home-like all-volunteer shelter is like.
I recently started volunteering with AWLMC and the phrase that I constantly say is "this is a well oiled machine." Seriously! Every volunteer is so compassionate and strives to do what they can in order to get the cats into the homes best fit for them. Not only are the volunteers amazing and the processes that are set in place extremely efficient--but the environment is great for the cats. One volunteer team is the enrichment team. This team comes into the house to play with and really get to know the cats, so they are never short of any attention. Additionally, it's a cage free house, so the cats get to roam around in their designated spaces and make their temporary stay feel like home. I have nothing but positive things to say about AWLMC!
I've loved my time as a volunteer and now a board member with AWLMC. This is a caring organization with no paid staff who care passionately and work hard to care for the cats in our shelter and in our county.
The AWLMC is a fantastic place to adopt a cat or kitten. This no-kill, all volunteer shelter takes wonderful care of its residents. The cats have plenty of space to roam and lots of care and companionship from the many volunteers. There's really no other place like it around here.
This organization runs a no-kill cat shelter in Gaithersburg. I volunteer as an adoption counselor several times a month. Adoption events are held three times a week by this 100% volunteer organization and the shelter is maintained beautifully by many volunteers who do so because of their love of animals.
I started fostering kittens for AWLMC and can’t say enough good things about this organization. Walking through the shelter was like walking through a home - so clean, inviting and warm. I’m so happy the cats have such a home like and cage free place to live while waiting for their forever homes. All the staff and volunteers love and care about every single cat and kitten that comes through their doors. I highly recommend and have referred friends and family here for kitten adoptions.
This organization has added such value to our lives as fosters. Every animal is treated with such personalized care. The team is incredibly sensitive to the well being of these beautiful creatures, even helping out other states when needed (recently rescued 17 animals in need from NC)!!!! Great folks, great organization....
My daughters and I had been volunteering with AWL for a year. The place is clean and organized. Everyone is filled with love and heart for animals and people, helping each other out to make this place precious.
A serene place with a wonderful staff. This facility does away with the basic concept of seeing your future pet in a cage and has them roaming free in a home like setting that is sure to put your "adoption anxiety" at ease.
The staff is knowledgeable as they are helpful when it comes to questions and you can take advantage of cuddling on a couch with a new "furry friend" while you're asking. After experiencing the vibe at The Animal Welfare League, I would never bother to go anywhere else. My family has sent several people there and we will continue to do so. BRAVO!
I love volunteering with AWLMC. We work together to help as many pets as possible through our shelter/adoptions as well as the reduced cost spay/neuter and pet food bank programs.
I am so pleased with the efforts AWLMC makes to improve the lives of the animals and people in our community. This organization has exceptional Volunteers who will stop at nothing to continue making a difference. I am proud to be part of the leadership supporting the mission. Please take a moment to learn more about us and visit our beautiful cat shelter in Old Town Gaithersburg!
Great facility, well socialized cats. Truly a team effort supporting each and every Cat!!
They value and encourage their volunteers, they select adopters with great attention to detail, they support other animal organizations and residents of Montgomery County with their programs and they are absolutely WONDERFUL to the cats! I've often thought that, If I was a cat, I would never want to leave AWLMC!!!
A very dedicated team of volunteers that help a lot of local kitties find homes!
Been a volunteer here in various capacities for a few years now. Each cat has a wonderful space to meet adopters, a caring and compassionate staff that attends to each individual kitties unique needs. The foster program is wonderful and helps kitties get adjusted and the staff to learn more about them before they even get to the house for adoption. Just an amazing bunch of dedicated people who are so devoted to these animals.
I am a proud volunteer of this organization. The house is wonderfully homey and organized. The cats receive excellent care, lots of attention, and a personalized experience to ensure that they receive the best home possible.
I have volunteered with this organization for a number of years. The shelter in unlike any in existence - it is homey and comfortable for cats and people. The AWLMC has found homes for many cats over the years and helped other rescue groups with fewer resources. A low-cost spay/neuter program along with a pet food bank are among the many ways the AWLMC helps the local community.
The AWLMC is a very caring and loving shelter..
I started sending them emails just after midnight on New Year's Eve about Kinsey who I was interested in adopting .. They responded to me right away the next day.. The provided answers to all of my questions and details about Kinsey.. They even provided me with the opportunity to Foster her first to make sure we were a good fit for one another. I emailed them every day after I took Kinsey home and they provided me with many useful tips to help Kinsey in her adjustment phase. The AWLMC is a lovely facility and provides a home-like environment for each cat.. Most importantly it's clear to me that the volunteer staff love each and every kitten or cat that enters their doors as if they were their own!
I have adopted 2 wonderful cats - Angel and Randy - from AWLMC. These folks genuinely care about the cats in their care.
My wife and I added two tabby kitten littermates to our family last summer at an adoption event sponsored by AWLMC. The entire experience was just great. The volunteers were friendly and very knowledgeable. The kitties were very healthy and well cared for. They had all their shots, were spayed/neutered and microchipped, all for an incredible bargain price. The love for animals this group has is evident in all they do!
we had a wonderful experience adopting 2 kittens from this shelter. We could tell how much the volunteers really care about their cats and kittens. I highly recommend AWLMC to anyone looking to adopt a cat or kitten.
This volunteer-run animal shelter is a great nonprofit. The commitment of our volunteers is absolutely incredible. Volunteers do a great job of matching cats to their prospective forever families. I love AWLMC!
I had been to no-kill cat shelters before, and even got one of my own cats at a Second Hand Chance, but when I got there I was absolutely blown away. These cats live in conditions that are probably better than some housecats! An abundance of cat trees, lovely window views, and each room only comes with two or three cats at the most. Not to mention how clean it is! The volunteer setup is really well organized, so that cats are always receiving some level of care, whether that's just having people play with them or coming to clean the litter boxes. It feels more like a sanctuary sometimes than a shelter. An absolutely wonderful place to volunteer--I feel lucky to be involved and I love watching all these cats feel so comfortable putting their personalities on display.
After a couple of tragic experiences with other facilities I found AWLMC and found my forever pal. As a redhead I was delighted to find a furry ginger to share my life. The staff were very forthcoming regarding Skipper's past - as they knew it - so that I was fully prepared to make our transition to each other as smooth as possible. I love their care and concern for the creatures who have come to be in their care. I know finding them - and have Skipper come to live with me - was an angel thing. Thank you for the work you continue to do, AWLMC!
This is a great organization to visit, donate to, or adopt from. They have beautiful kitties and dedicated volunteers.

I am proud to be a board member of the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County! This organization impresses me every day by all they are able to accomplish, especially being 100% volunteer!
I recently adopted a cat from the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, and I'm so happy about my experience with them. I visited their facility a few times before I actually adopted my cat, and each time the volunteers were kind, informative, and patient with me. The facility itself is also a lovely home to all of the cats AWLMC rescues, so I knew my kitty was well-loved and cared for during his time with them. I have also been able to keep AWLMC updated on my cat's progress since we've brought him home via Facebook, and their continuing words of kindness and encouragement mean a lot... I can tell everyone involved there cares a great deal to volunteer with AWLMC.
Thank you AWLMC . You all have been so helpful with friendly, previously owned cats that end up in feral cat colonies and need foster until they can find a new loving home. You are so great to work with. The shelter is so beautiful and everyone is so nice.
AWLMC is a wonderful organization. I was private fostering a kitty for 9 months when I found out about AWL. I visited the facility and was very impressed by the cleanliness, and the very home-like set-up that the facility has. The workers and volunteers are friendly and out-going. I encouraged the kitty's owner to see AWL and consider moving her to AWL as the kitty was very nice and not getting any exposure to the public at my home. Sylvia(the kitty) was accepted at AWL and was adopted within 10 days!
If you are looking for a cat to join your family, please make AWL your first stop. Also if you are looking for a good group to donate to, this facility and the work they do, are very deserving of your $$. Photo is of Sylvia.
