Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Veterinary Services

Mission: History: The Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling, MA (also referred to as the Sterling Shelter) EIN # 04-3236868 is a non-profit organization (formed in 1988 - incorporated in 1996) and no-kill animal shelter with no time or age restrictions. The shelter exists to provide humane sheltering and high quality medical care for stray, unwanted, abused and neglected animals and to find loving, lifelong homes for orphaned pets. Our staff is dedicated to finding good homes for adoptable pets and we continue to promote responsible pet ownership and to improve the quality of life for the animals and people in our community. The Shelter is supported entirely by donations from private individuals and through surrender and adoption fees. The Animal Shelter, Inc. does not receive support from the United Way or from federal, state or local governments. Our on-site veterinary clinic cares for over 4,000+ animals that come through yearly and provides a low/no cost spay/neuter, general wellness program assisting local animal control officers, shelters and breed rescues. Position Statement – A leader in our field, The Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling is a happy, clean, well run, family friendly animal shelter with progressive programs that improves lives by raising the bar for animal care in our shelter and community. We are an established organization committed to placing animals in caring homes through innovative programs and placement services. At the Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling we share a core belief that we will only help animals by working proactively and compassionately with people. Reflected in all of our programs and services is our belief that people and animals are inherently good. We strive to create a judgment-free and caring environment for all community members seeking our services, whether they are surrendering a pet, adopting or utilizing our low-cost services. This philosophy is shared with all employees and volunteers. We have a streamlined adoption process and have a more positive way of connecting people and animals. There are no lengthy applications and screening processes. Instead, we want to engage in conversation with prospective adopters. If we start from a perspective that people are coming to us with the best intentions, we will have a much better success rate of finding life-long matches.

Amazing staff! Their care of the animals and their meticulous detail to be sure each animal has a great home is above & beyond. I have three rescues from them. They are happy healthy dogs. Two are from Puerto Rico. They make the process of adopting so great. I will be back again and again. We have one who is half Jack Russell and half Beagle. She’s a high energy dog, and they made sure to ask if Henley would be active snd have humans around. My husband works from home, myself & our 4 kids are always in and out. We have land on a lake and trails across from our house to go for walks. They didn’t want her to be a home all day in a crate dog. We love the Sterling Animal Shelter!! Henley is 5, Pepper 3, and Mylo 2.

We have gotten 2 furry family members from Sterling Animal shelter. They were already spade and neutered. When we got them from the shelter we could tell that they were being well loved. The place is clean and given the clientele did not have a bad odor; the pets were well groomed too . I have recommended this place over the years to anybody looking for a pet. They made the process easy for me and exciting for the whole family.

About 13 years ago I came home with a dog after going to sterling shelter “just to go look”.. we know how that goes. Shortly after her adoption we found out she had cancer at 1 year old. Luckily her kind was very treatable and sterling shelter took care of her and was able to give her chemotherapy treatments. She lived until she was 13.5 years old. Because of sterling shelter my furry family member was able to live a long and and happy life.

The familiar line: who rescued who?” comes to mind when I think of Sterling Animal Shelter. We are forever grateful for Sterling because we never would have added or most spoiled boy of the family. They were instrumental in helping us find the best black lab ever. Our entire family states that if we ever won the lottery we’d donate a chunk to the best shelter around. Thank you Sterling!

My husband and I adopted 2 kittens in late 2020. We had just lost our cat of 16 years to cancer. Sterling called us just days after submitting an application to select our kittens. The staff was above and beyond the nicest, and friendliest staff I've ever met. The staff member who helped us pick our kittens knew that they had a lot of energy and needed a big house to run around in. I was impressed that they knew each animal so well. I cried when we got home and let our kittens in to their furever home. I'm eternally grateful to Sterling and enjoy donating to ensure more families find so much joy!

We adopted our beautiful dog Layla from Sterling nearly 5 years ago. Before going to the Sterling Shelter, we did not know about street dogs from Puerto Rico, known as satos, or the efforts to rescue them. We are very thankful to Sterling for partnering with organizations in Puerto Rico such as All Sato Rescue to bring these wonderful dogs to New England. Although the shelter was very busy that day, the adoption process went smoothly. It was clear that Layla had received excellent care during her time at Sterling, and from her foster family in Puerto Rico. She is a wonderful dog, who was shy and cautious with us at first, but soon settled in and became comfortable in her new home. We recommend the Sterling Shelter to anyone looking to adopt a dog or cat. We even adopted two guinea pigs from them a number of years ago.

We adopted our beautiful 1 1/2 year old hound mix from the Sterling Shelter in April. Although it was a busy morning at the shelter, the staff members were friendly and helpful to us and we did not feel rushed. We had not known about their partnership with All Sato Rescue in Puerto Rico prior to our shelter visit, but we were delighted to be able to adopt a former stray from Puerto Rico and bring her into our family. We would recommend this shelter if you are looking for a dog or cat to adopt.

Sterling helped us adopt a terrific puppy who was born in Puerto Rico. Their communication was clear. We made a date to meet a puppy (we were only permitted to meet one puppy due to high demand), and we chose to take her. She has been healthy and happy, and we have zero regrets. The Sterling facility seemed well managed, with clean grounds and a small but adequate enclosure for introducing people to pups. It seems that they are doing some wonderful work. A minor criticism: Sterling’s Facebook page has occasional posts about other litters from the same Puerto Rican shelter, but nothing about ours. So I asked Sterling via email and on the FB page for anything about our puppy’s origins—just something basic about where she was found, etc. One Puerto Rican staff member posted a brief note saying she had taken care of that litter, but that post was soon removed, and Sterling has been silent. I was able to make contact with the owner of a littermate via the FB page, and, like me, that owner would have appreciated learning even a little bit.

thank you for the review - as far as the dog you adopted not sure why you had issues/we had issues on FB? Will ask the team. In the meantime you can also join the PR FB page which is dedicated to the adopters who specifically adopted from the group in PR - many of the fosters/rescuers/siblings can also be found there. Most of these poor souls are simply found abandoned on the streets and don't necessarily have a long history or background that we know of :( https://www.facebook.com/groups/PRAdopters

We found about Sterling through Subaru- I brought my car in for service and an employee had their dog there. I mentioned we were looking for a dog, and they recommended Sterling to me. Subaru is known to support animal rescues.

I started to lean in and learn about the compassionate, tireless work that this shelter does and I knew this was the shelter I would fight to adopt from. Through all our interactions, it's been clear they put the animals' needs before the humans, and are very assertive yet respectful in doing that.

Since adopting our puppy, they've compelled me over and over again to donate and support them, and I feel a long lasting connecting to Sterling because they helped us find our puppy and they never ever stop doing the same for the other animals they save. There's something to be said about their persistent dedication to animals. I am a better person for interacting with them.

Our experience with Sterling Animal Shelter occurred when we adopted 2 labs (1 Yellow and 1 Black) that had been found wandering a local city. The Animal Control Officer at that time had both of them and we made contact with him to adopt both of the dogs. Before we could have them they both had to be fixed. They were taken to Sterling Animal Shelter for this surgery. The Animal Control Officer was told to ensure they kept the cones of shame on so they could not get to the incision. Needless to say the ACO didn't do that and when we did receive the girls they both were very active and neither of them had their cones on. We noticed the following day one of them the yellow lab needed to be seen and the ACO told us where to her. This is when I learned they needed to return to The Sterling Animal Shelter. Once there the woman I spoke with was upset that the AOC didn't comply with the instructions he was given. I wish I could remember the woman's name who I spoke with because she was absolutely fabulous. Talking with her I could see her concern and passion for what she does. She kept our little girl and fixed the issue. When I returned I could visibly see how well she was taken care of and everyone was so kind. The complete experience was one I will always remember. I have since donated items that we no longer had the need for and will continue in the future. They are an absolute blessing for all animals. Here is a picture of Riley (black) and Sadie (yellow). Riley tried to pose as a skunk. We have had them now for 5 years and have loved every minute!

I am both an adopter and a volunteer at the shelter. I adopted my cat 7 years ago. She has brought much love and joy to our household. As a volunteer, I have experienced so much happiness watching these homeless pets find their "forever homes" and loving families. While they wait for their new families to take them home, they are well cared for at the shelter. Their physical and emotional needs are fulfilled by all the staff and my fellow volunteers. The facility is always clean and the medical care is excellent. The animals come first and find homes very quickly after arriving from southern states and PR. I highly recommend becoming a volunteer if nearby or if in search of a "fur baby", use the website and visit the shelter.

A few years ago we had to put our dog of 13 years down due to old age. I was devastated. Although I knew I would adopt a dog again, I couldn’t bear to keep his things around. I washed his bed, blanket, leashes, and toys and donated them to Sterling. A month later I couldn’t bear to not have a dog in my life. I saw a dog on Sterling’s website that I knew I had to have. I went that weekend to adopt him but saw that there was already a big line. I stayed and waited and waited and knew it was meant to be when it was my turn and he was the last dog left that day. I knew again that it was meant to be when I went to meet him in his pen and saw all my old dogs things that I had donated the month before! We took him home that day and named him Ditto :) Our experience through the whole adoption process was great. The staff is incredibly nice, understanding, and compassionate. You can tell that they want what is best for the animals. Because we had such a great experience, a year later we went back and adopted Buddy. Both dogs have been a great addition to our family.

My cocker spaniel, Pookie, passed away at 13 years old in November. I was heartbroken and devastated, and couldn't bear to see his beds, blankets, and toys in the house. I washed everything with care, and donated them to the Sterling Animal Shelter. Even though I missed Pookie dearly and knew that I would mourn him for a long time, I also knew that there were many dogs in shelters that needed a home and needed the love I could give. I checked Sterling's website, and saw a spaniel mix that reminded me of Pookie. The website noted that he would be ready for adoption that weekend. I was already excited to meet him. We arrived at the shelter an hour before they opened, but there was already a long line. We were 10th in line and I knew that there were only 7 dogs available for adoption that day. I was nervous that I wouldn't get to meet that spaniel mix. Finally it was our turn and sign #1, that spaniel mix was the last dog available for adoption that day! He was timid and shy and a bit nervous around my husband and young son. But he jumped up on me and I just new that when we got him home we could make him feel welcomed and loved and that he would come out of his shell. Sign #2, I looked in his pen and low and behold, Pookie's items that I donated the month before were in his pen! I new it was meant to be. We took him home and have loved him and spoiled him ever since. I named him Ditto, of course.

The staff at Sterling were so great to work with. When I donated Pookie's things I cried when I dropped them off, but they comforted me and shared stories of their own with me. When we arrived a month later and were lucky enough to adopt Ditto, the process was easy. Five stars from us!!

Two years ago, we adopted a shy Sato from Sterling Animal Shelter. She had been rescued in Puerto Rico as a young puppy, spent a month in a wonderful foster home, and then was transported to Sterling Animal Shelter. She was adopted one day and was returned to the shelter the next day. When I arrived, she had been back at the shelter for about an hour and was hiding in the corner of her pen. I was allowed to go into the pen to sit with her. She was shaking, but she let me pat her. We had brought our other dog along and were able to take both dogs out to an enclosed area to meet. The volunteer informed me that our current dog would bring the puppy to us. She did help the puppy feel more comfortable. We adopted the puppy on that day. Over the past two years, we have enrolled her in many training classes, as well as fun classes, like a tricks class. She is so much more comfortable than she was on that first night when she hid under the bed in the middle of the night. She enjoys running and playing with our other dog.

I adopted my cat Twixie (Grumpy) from Sterling Animal Shelter last August 2018.
I had a three year old Male cat I have adopted from another shelter who was very lonely. Twixie cane from a family of six makes so I knew she would love BOO.
They instantly bonded and now a year later, Twixie has brought much happiness to our household. The picture with the litter pellet on my bed sheet. That is how Twixie lets me know where she sleeps at night! The staff at Sterling Animal Shelter were very kind and supportive as I went through the adoption process.

We adopted our dog Boston from the Sterling animal shelter. It was clean, the volunteers and staff were wonderful, and we truly got a 1 of a kind dog. He was a skinny little puppy in this big kennel with a smile on his face and a tail that (to this day) has never stopped wagging. Thanks again for this wonderfully goofy dog, we love him so much

My mother had passed in January of this year. My children were very close too her and my 20 yr old daughter cried every night she had lost her best friend her grandmother. She had always wanted a dog. We went to Sterling Shelter and there she was. Love at first sight. I can't thank them enough for bringing my daughter's smile back.

My story is about Porter (formerly known as Dino). He was found in Puerto Rico with his siblings. He was fostered by a loving family while in Puerto Rico. When he was brought to Sterling, my husband and I fell in love. He was an adorable 7lb, 14 week old puppy. Covered in freckles and two big black spots. That was in 2015. Fast forward to 2019, I have been in contact with Porter's foster mother in Puerto Rico. My husband and I are planning a trip to see her. Did I mention that she kept one of Porter's siblings! So when we go down, we will meet Porter's brother. All this was made possible through sterling animal shelter. We cannot thank them enough for bringing this amazing dog into our lives. The first picture is Porter on our boat. The second picture is from his foster mother! The third picture is of him with his siblings. The fourth picture is of his brother, Ollie.

We adopted our fur baby Phoebe (aka Laura) from Sterling Animal Shelter in October 2017. She has been a blessing to our family. She brings us lots of laughter and smiles. She is one of a kind. I can't thank Sterling enough for helping transport her up here from Puerto Rico. Our experience when we got to the shelter was awesome. They are definitely doing things right. Everything from starting out picking out our pup and going through the adoption process was super easy. These folks definitely care about all the animals they take in. I would totally adopt again from them again. Thanks again for connecting us up with our Miss Phoebe Buffay!!

In 2008, a 3-month-old Sterling Shelter bundle of love entered our lives: Sunny Dee. She is now 10 years old and continues to shower us with unconditional puppy love. In 2014 I was honored to be chosen as a volunteer photographer for Sterling Shelter. It has been almost four years that I have been wrangling the pups when they arrive, and capturing their puppy eyes to post on the Sterling site. In that time, I have seen how amazing Sterling really is. Thousands of pups find their forever home thanks to the love and dedication of the staff there. I'm always amazed that "my babies" are usually adopted within two days. And, hats off to Brenda Frost, who makes the photo shoots so much easier with her wit and puppy wisdom. Sterling is definitely a 5-star organization!

I am a volunteerat the Animal Shelter, Inc (Sterling Shelter). I've fallen in love with cats, kittens, pups & dogs during this time, but cannot adopt one. Lots of people ask me, "How can you volunteer & not go home with an animal?" I always say that "I give as much love to these rescues as I would to my own pet."

I used to be scared of dogs & of certain breeds. I'm still a little hesitant with some of the rescues, but can proudly say that I've sat in a kennel with dogs that are bigger than me with no problems while receiving kisses & hugs by some of these gentle giants.

Many of my friends have adopted from the Sterling Shelter (kittens, puppies & rabbits) & I would highly recommend this shelter to anyone who would care to adopt a furry baby. #EveryoneDeservesAFureverHome.

We bought our first home 5 years ago. When we bought we knew we needed to add a dog to our family. We found the most amazing German shepherd hound mix pup at sterling. She had just gotten there from PR with her siblings. We went and hung out with the pups for awhile and just knew who was meant to be our new family member. Flash forward 5 years and Bella is happy in her home. She now has 2 other dog siblings weve adopted. She has been one of the best additions to our family. Sterling animal shelter was incredibly accommodating and informative . The next spring our 2 legged kids had a lemonade sale and donated all their profits from the weekend to Sterling animal shelter.

Thank you Sterling Animal Shelter for our beautiful Nia.

Nia and her 4 siblings arrived to Sterling Animal Shelter in January 2015 from the Southside Animal Rescue League in Virginia and we had the best day ever by taking her home.

Adopting a pet from Sterling Animal Shelter is great because you get to pick out and bring home all supplies that are needed for your new family member. You do not have to hurry to a store.

We were able to consult with the onsite Vet about a concern that we had about Nia. The Vet said, she was confident to adopt Nia out and she was correct.

Thank you Sterling Animal Shelter!!

Nia is a huge part of our family and everyone loves her!

I've been volunteering here for 3 years. The amount of animals I've seen go through the doors to their forever homes is simply remarkable. The staff are all positive driven people who always act in the best interest of the animals. While this may not always be popular, the staff does an amazing jobs of taking care of all of the animals that come through that door. I've seen over 45 cars waiting to get in the door, with a completely full parking lot, and yet they are able to process everyone as efficiently and friendly as possible. I always look forward to walking in that door.

I have been blessed to be a volunteer at the Sterling Shelter for many years and I have seen many beautiful adoptions happen in that time. I think things can't get more beautiful. But then a few weeks ago when the shipment of rescues from Puerto Rico were ready to go home the beauty struck again. As people were coming into the shelter to find their new pet I watched a big burly gentleman walk through looking into the pens. I would have thought this man would stop at a pen with a happy hearty pup but instead he stopped at a pen with a tiny 3 year old terrier mix that was shaking badly. I could almost see his heart burst. He bent down and picked up that shaking pup and held him to his breast to comfort him and never let him go. I can't say enough about our loving patrons who help us save these rescue pets every week.

2 years ago after the loss of our 18 year pet, we traveled to this shelter in a snow storm to adopt a new family member. We arrived at the shelter and it was better then any I have seen. The kennels were large , clean, and well heated and the staff was very helpful with the adoption process. There is a Vet onsite to discuss any concerns. I didn’t have any particular puppy in mind until I locked eyes with a tiny black puppy from Puerto Rico. She was shaking and afraid. I cuddled her in my arms and I could feel all of her love. We took her home . She has grown into the most wonderful dog. I’ve never loved a pet as much as I love my Sato! So please adopt don’t shop. Give these souls a chance. I volunteered at the shelter and met a wonderful black lab mix pup. I'm a terrier girl, I didn't need a lab but he was darling. The next day I went to volunteer, he wasn't there. They said they'd gotten a call from one of the local vet universities, wanting a pup for a vet tech class. He was there 2 weeks and when he came back, he was immediately shipped out to a community college for another couple of weeks of school. This went on for 2 months, I never saw him again because he was always out at another school. I'd been thinking about him, dreaming about him at night and I felt like I needed him in my life. Finally I was there when he was returned. I took him straight out and put him in my truck and took him home. I called the shelter manager and told her and she laughed. She said she could tell how much I loved him so I could fill out the papers any time. I got him on my birthday, best present I've ever gotten myself. As you can see by his photo, I named him Rock Star. His tongue reminded me of Gene Simmons!

Rocks was diagnosed with epilepsy shortly after I got him. Within a short while, he could tell if my blood sugar was low (I'm diabetic) and I could tell if a seizure was coming. We were each others support animal.

We decided our other dog needed a friend when he passed so we returned to Sterling Shelter and came home with another SATO pup who has shown to be just as sweet and gentle. I had my dog spayed at their low cost clinic. This service they provide is invaluable to the community as it gives an alternative option to do the responsible thing by spaying/neutering your pets despite high costs that are typically charged at a vets office. The process was well organized, from the scheduling, to the drop off, and the pick up. The techs and doctors were friendly and professional. They did an amazing job with the procedure itself. Upon a follow up visit our vet commented on the precision of the cut and closure. The quality of care was in no way "low end" just because it is low cost.

I am also a former resident of Sterling and have constantly heard of great adoption experiences, including a close friend, who brought home the sweetest pup!

It's been many years since I started volunteering at the Sterling Animal Shelter and I could not imagine a better way to spend my days. To see how many homeless pups and cats find love and care and eventually their forever homes is sometimes more than my heart can hold.
The job of a shelter employee is hard. They go home tired each day from all the cleaning and lifting that proper care involves. I see these (mostly) women in their labors of love each day and am in awe of what a special shelter they make us.
Thousands of animals come through our gates each year for medical care and a second chance at a loving family and there is no better day than when we see a pup find that special family.
To all the employees and all my volunteer friends who labor endlessly for the good of the animals I could not be more proud to be in your company.

I adopted my pup Bella from here in June 2014. I had wanted a dog for years but always had landlords that didn't allow pets. I bought my first home in May 2014 and shortly after started talking to friends about places to get a dog. I was informed about Sterling from a friend who rescued his dog from there. When I got home that night I looked at their website and seen this little cute face of a dog that was a lab/mix 3 months old and knew instantly I wanted to bring her home. I drove to Sterling the following morning and told them I wanted to give her a home and she has been my little buddy and now big buddy for over 2 years now. Sterling made my first pet adoption easy and explained everything I would need to do after that to make sure she stayed healthy and for me to be a responsible owner. She loves everything, people, animals, car rides, walks, hiking, playing fetch and just wants to be around so she doesn't miss any fun stuff. Thank You Sterling Animal Shelter for the best sidekick a guy could ask for.

We got our first two dogs four years ago from Animal Shelter, Inc. They were only 12 weeks old, skinny, clumsy and all legs, but so sweet. Today they're big goofy bed hogs that get into more trouble than seems possible, but, amazingly, more loved than the year we brought them home. Two months ago a foster puppy from Animal Shelter, Inc also joined our family. He wasn't doing well in the kennel environment, and needed a family to take care of him while he underwent surgery on two knees and a hip. He quickly became one of the pack and can always be found one step behind his new big brother and sister. Animal Shelter, Inc has helped us find all of fur babies and I wouldn't hesitate to go back to them the next time we want to expand our family.

Our current pup, Bella, just turned one year old. She was found in a dumpster. :( The Animal Shelter Inc in Sterling Massachusetts saved her....and we were the lucky family who adopted her. From dumpster to clean luxury sheets....we think she deserves it. :)
We love Bella. We love Animal Shelter Inc in Sterling.

I've been to many shelters throughout New England and this is by far the cleanest shelter I've been to.... the animals were all super happy...healthy and the website was easy to use and best of all it was updated multiple times each day....
the volunteers are amazing... they come in and walk the dogs, bath the animals, brush the kitties and generally seem very HAPPY to be here....
the staff is very knowledgeable, easy to work with and best of all I learned all about crate training my puppy when I never believed in crates until learning from the staff about how much it really benefits the puppy!
I can't say enough great stuff about the shelter.... we recommend them to everyone we know and half our neighborhood has adopted from the shelter!

They even have an on-site vet clinic which offers low cost spay/neuter to the public which really came in handy when we recently had a stray cat "adopt us". THANK YOU TO THE STAFF of the clinic and shelter for taking amazing care of our furry kids!

We adopted Sally our Sato Rescue Pup in March of this year from Sterling on a snowy Friday night. It was late and they were shutting down. As we were leaving, I asked to the see her spay incision. It was beginning to open and the glue holding it together was peeling off. I asked if it was safe to take her and was assured it was. The staff person grabbed an E Collar off another dog, put it on Sally and we left. By the time we got home not only had the incision opened, but it was draining copious amounts of blood and sero-sanguineous fluid. We took her to Tufts and they sewed her up saying they would not charge us for the surgery because the shelter should never have released her in that condition. Later, I contacted the shelter veterinarian to discuss my concerns. Expecting to hear that she was sorry about the dog having to go through two surgeries in 48 hours and that the protocol for releasing animals post-op would be reviewed, I was instead told that my husband and I were lying about the circumstances, Tufts was indeed going to charge us the full amount, that the dog had been manhandled by us and that she and the staff held no liability for the event. She defended the staff person who released her to us stating she had worked there many years and was trusted implicitly. My feeling is the hour was late, the staff wanted to get home and little thought was given to the dogs. Presumably the one who's E collar was removed to give to ours had it for a reason but was left without. Had that happened to Sally? Is that why her glue was coming off, because she had lacked adequate post-op care? In the end, we are grateful to have this lovely, friendly, wonderful pup. Would we adopt a Sato again? Absolutely! From Sterling Animal Shelter.....probably not.

As a volunteer, I've learned a lot & have lost my fear of dogs. Everyone is friendly & helpful. They take the time to answer questions & to make sure that all of the animals are well taken care of. I know many people who have adopted their new furry friends from the Sterling Shelter & I hope that many more do so also.

This place is doing wonders for both humans and animals alike. By spaying and neutering so many puppies they are helping curb overpopulation so that someday there might not be so many dogs without homes. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They care deeply for their cause, and are amazing! I've met many dogs that have been adopted from there and they are terrific pets.

Thank you Sterling Animal Shelter INC for all you do!

Adopted our dog Boone (aka Billy the Kid ) there almost 4 years ago, he is a great dog. I loved how they wanted you to bring your dog(s) with you if you already had one to meet a potential sibling to see how they took to each. Our older dog Sam helped us pick Boone out! Staff was great and very friendly.

I adopted one of my dogs from this shelter and the staff were very knowledgeable and answered all the many questions that I had about where the pup came from and all of it's medical history. The shelter is very clean and you can tell that the staff and volunteers really care about the animals that they take care of. This is not a sad shelter...the animals are adopted very quickly! Sometimes there is even a line at the gate before they open, like the day I was there! I recommend this shelter to everyone I know.

We've adopted more than once from Sterling shelter and refer ALL our friends, family, coworkers... Who've also adopted! The staff are all very knowledgeable and it shows how much they care... Knowing the names of each animal and the right fit for our family was helpful! The volunteers are always walking dogs and always have a smile on their face! We've been to a lot of shelters and to many times were ignored by staff or treated like a burden... I can't recommend them enough!!! Our pup was friendly healthy and well adjusted! Thank you Sterling for making adoption a PLEASURE not interrogation!!!

Sterling Animal Shelter is such a fantastic shelter! When I went to adopt my puppy last year they let me spend all the time I wanted in the kennel with the puppies so I could choose the right one for me. They were sure to get the low-down about my entire living situation before they allowed me to adopt. They were very professional, and caring. I'm a certified dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement methods exclusively, and I know what to look for in how people interact with dogs. They were great with all of the puppies!

My puppy has such an incredible disposition that she is now trained as my personal service dog. She does Competition Obedience, and Canine Nosework, and she has her Canine Good Citizen certification too! Our next steo is getting her therapy dog certification.

I believe the caring people at the shelter are what helped my pup make positive associations with people, and made her such a friendly puppy U^.^U
