Mission: The Animal Protection Society of Durham is a leader in building lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach and providing care for animals in need. We work to educate the public about the humane care and treatment of animals, promote spay/neuter and encourage the adoption of homeless animals. Our vision is that there are no displaced or unwanted pets; all animals are treated with compassion and respect; and community services are available to all pet owners. The Animal Protection Society of Durham is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1970, and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990.

TLDR: Don't bring animals here unless you want them to be killed. They have a better chance on the street.

Animal "Protection" Society is the most ironic name for this place. They do not protect animals. My partner found the sweetest pup at the park. The poor dog was emaciated, but was still friendly to both him and my dog. This dog was obviously owned by someone before because he was house and crate trained, as well as neutered. We took him there to get him checked for a chip and let them use their resources to help find the previous owner. We left our info and said that if no one came forward that we would like to adopt him. My partner called after that weekend. He was spoken to rudely and told that they would call us when the dog was ready. We hadn't heard anything for weeks, so he called again today just to find out that they put him down. They didn't tell us or try to contact us to save him. They claimed he was barking and aggressive. When you have been starving and alone on the streets and then suddenly in a loud noisy building with strangers, how do you think a scared animal may react? Oh, also they still have his picture on the website even though they've already killed him.

I have just recently begun volunteering at the Durham APS and the staff and volunteers truly care about the animals. I was initially hesitant to get invovled because I know that open-admission shelters can be emotionally tough to be around, but the Durham APS is very transparent about what to expect and they provide a lot of training and support for volunteers. I always feel like I am directly able to make an impact on an animal's life by coming in and I am always confident about speaking to people I know on behalf of the APS. I think the staff do such a great job providing the maximum care for the animals while also being very resourceful with what they have. I would encourage anyone to volunteer and donate here because your time and money are truly appreciated.
