On July 5, 2025 I called The Animal League of Green Valley (TALGV). I spoke to someone about adopting a 13 pound, 3 year old chihuahua that I had seen on their web site. I was told that someone had a hold on the dog and were going to come in on the 7th to meet the dog, but they canceled. I was then told that I couldn't place a hold over the phone and to come in on the 6th at 10am if I wanted a chance to adopt it. I filled out the online application and went to see the dog on the 6th. I Liked the dog and told the work I wanted to adopt him. The worker said I had to file out the application. I told her I did and handed it to her. She then took it to the office. She returned and told me the only concern was that my yard wasn't fenced. I then told her that I lived a a 55+ community that was completely fenced. She went back to the office a then returned and said that was fine and I could adopt the dog.

Being the 4th of July weekend they were not adopting out any animals till the 7th which I understood. On the 7th I made the 45 minute one way trip back to the shelter. I arrived for my 11am appointment. A worker lead me back to the office. She opened the the to let me enter. I made it just inside the door in the hallway and was stop by a person. The first thing she said was I am not adopting that dog to you. I was in shock. I said that the day before I was told that I could adopt the dog. She then made the statement (how are you going to play with and walk the dog. You need a senior dog). She said that the dog is a very active dog and that is why the lady that adopted him returned him. She then stated the previous lady said the dog needed the be with someone that has kids or other dogs. Usually rescues always request no children when it comes to chihuahuas. If the lady that previously adopted the dog was such an expert then why did she adopt a very active dog. Maybe she needed a senior dog.

I then said why is it was an issue today and not yesterday. She said because she had not had a chance to meet me. I feel that she still didn't meet me because she never spoke to me before saying she would not adopt the dog to me. What it comes down to is she saw I was old, fat, disabled and walked slowly.

I feel very humiliated, discriminated against and judged. If anyone reading this fits into any of those categories I would not try to adopt at this organization. By the way her name is Kim and says she is the president of the organization. There website says they do not discriminate. What a joke. She just proved she does. Look at the other reviews. I wish I had before I wasted my time.

I adopted a cat from the Animal League of Green Valley last year and was very impressed with the facilities and the care the cats receive. I adopted a young female cat they called Dex (I renamed her Clara) and we very happily share this house. She was used to human touch when I brought her home and settled in immediately. I attribute that to the care and socialization she received from Animal League of Green Valley since she was brought in as a stray and was wary of humans when she was found. She was already spayed and chipped by them when I adopted her. She is FIV-positive and they will provide vet care for life for animals who have some heath issues. I have chosen to just handle the vet care myself, but I love that they had that as an option.

I have been a volunteer, working with cats, for about six years. This organization is 100% volunteer-run, and everyone is completely committed to the animals' well-being. Many volunteers give very generously of their time, and are long-time volunteers. Volunteers are appreciated by our leaders and also by people who adopt our animals. I look forward to my shift each week, which my husband describes as my "therapy," since I come home on such a high after interacting with the cats for a few hours.

For six years I have volunteered with the cats. The leaders are knowledgeable and really care about the animals--I have learned quite a bit even though I've had my own pets over the years. They encourage volunteers to do as much as they can, and for a few years I have been a foster mom to kittens. They provide all the equipment and food and I provide the shelter and love. Each batch of kittens has had its own "personality" and unique challenges, and the Animal League is always there with support and advice. There is great camaraderie among the volunteers and I have made good friends. It is especially rewarding to see a cat find a home and we work especially hard for the cats who have been with us the longest, helping them to overcome fear and begin to trust humans.

Before I moved to Green Valley and started volunteering at The Animal League of Green Valley (TALGV), I had volunteered at two highly reputable shelters in St. Louis, MIssouri. But proud as I was to be part of those sterling organizations, neither can hold a candle to the level of care I found at the Animal League of Green Valley, be it cleanliness, interaction with the animals, individualized diets, medical attention, comfortable space for the animals, safety for people and the dogs and cats, interaction with the community, the breadth of the foster program, the organized and dedicated administration, and the devotion of the workers, all of whom are volunteers, many of whom have been there for years, and most of us in our 60s, 70s, and even 80s. The thread that binds us all together is an abiding love for animals and the passion for finding homes for the orphaned.

I have volunteered two different ways at the Animal League of Green Valley. Once as a cat socializer & the other time as part of a team that cleans the cat areas in the morning. If you are an animal lover you will find this so satisfying to be able to make a difference in their lives as they await a new home. The Animal League is truly making such a difference in our community. We adopted our cat from here.

This past year we adopted a dog from this facility. We were so impressed with the caring volunteers and employees who worked there, as well as the cleanliness and overall space they gave to each dog and cat. Our dog we adopted had received a detailed medical exam in which she was deemed healthy for adoption. She has been a fantastic addition to our family and we are so happy that we found her at The Animal League of Green Valley. They called and did a check-in with us a few weeks after we adopted her as well.

At this time I am not able to own a dog, as I do not ambulate well and it would not be fair to the animal. However, I sometimes go to the Animal League of Green Valley to get my doggie fix, I love seeing them, sometimes petting them too. The volunteers are very friendly, welcoming and helpful when I just come for a visit. Wonderful!

We had an excellent experience with the Animal League of Green Valley. The staff was kind, courteous, and professional. We adopted a beautiful puppy that was a gift to our family as she has brought so much love and enjoyment to all of us. The environment at the facility is beautiful for the animals. Everyone is extremely conscientious about the care of the animals. The follow-up care was exceptional. I have recommended ALGV to friends and family and will continue to do so without hesitation.

We have adopted 4 animals from ALGV. 2 dogs and 2 cats. The kittens are our most recent addition to our family.
We got Bubba (dog) first at about 3 months he was a perfect match. Then decide he needed a buddy so they we’re close in age. After searching for a month or so they had this little white female fluff ball pup. Scheduled a meet and greet but she was a bit to energetic, Bubba is a very timid and shy pup. They said the did have another puppy but very shy and timid too. They brought up the cutest tiger faced pup you could ever imagine. Those 2 are now inseparable. They do everything together and that includes being up mamas butt all the time, I don’t mind it one bit. We named the second pup Harley, my husband was the one who named him, for whom has passed on. Harley was 2 1/2 months when he joined our family (Bubba was 6 months)
The kittens Zola and Ziva are coming out of hiding now that was a long process but it’s worth it. They are 7 months and so precious glad we got them.

I always recommend this rescue (I try my best to get people to adopt from their local rescues)I am so happy with our decision to rescue from here.

After my rescue dog died u couldn't imagine living without another dog in my life. I spent hours browsing through rescue sites and visiting places to adopt dogs. I stumbled across Green Valley rescue website. It was easy to navigate. It's an hour from my house, but I was on a mission. A volunteer met with my husband and myself to discuss what our needs were. Our main concern was that our new dog get along with our aging cat..and also my husband..there was one dog in particular that I was interested in. Jax..he was a bit skinny and probably bigger than my husband would have liked. The volunteer brought him to us in a designated area. Jax immediately sat on my husband's foot and stayed there. My husband, not a huge fan of large dogs wasn't completely convinced. We went home to think about it.. two days later we returned to bring him home. It's been 4 years..Jax now 75 lbs is the best dog. He enjoys taking walks, camping and being part of our family, including Lil Kirbs our kitty. I couldn't be happier with the way we were treated at green valley rescue..thx yo so much

My wife and I were lucky to find The Animal League of Green Valley (TALGV). We were about to start some worldwide travels after retiring and then the pandemic put a stop to that! Instead we ended up becoming serial foster parents for 4 great dogs! (Bear/Takeda, Cisco, Poppy, and Perdita). We were able to give them a loving temporary home AND help them find families to provide their forever homes. Each dog had unique personalities, some had medical conditions, BUT all gave us much more than we gave them. TALGV provided training (for us and the dogs) as was well as food, medicine, and any necessary vet care. But what really sets this nonprofit apart is the volunteers who tirelessly match us with dogs, followed up on their care and training, and kept looking for possible adoptive families until we got that wonderful call to come in and meet a family that wanted to adopt. TALGV is a truly wonderful organization that does great work on behalf of our 4 legged friends!

6 years ago, my dog, Bug was very ill.. she was 10 years old at the time..
she had pyometra. I did not know what was wrong with her. At the time, I was injured from a slip and fall, had torn my hamstring. They came, took poor Bug to the vet. Saved her life! She spent 6 years more with me than she would have if they had not helped. I could not afford the vet bill. They also have helped my community with their pets. They have taken many of my rescues that were in very bad condition and did everything they could for them and got them into good homes. They give out food to help also and many other items! They are completely non profit. No one gets paid even a penny for working there. The shelter is lovingly run by many volunteers.. who fuss over those animals, make their environment very clean and walk the dogs daily . They are The BEST.. An animal that ends up in their care is lucky!

Some time back I went visiting, basically searching for adult cat to adopt... several possibilities, was interested in one that appeared to be feral rescue who had been adopted then returned.
She was perched by herself up at the top of a cat tree, did not flinch when I approached. Accepted a treat and allowed some light petting... OK, the result was she went home with me.

I think the Animal League of Green Valley had done a really good job of socializing this cat who now lives up to her name, that is Zena "the warrior princess" who now rules my household when not checking out the birds I feed in the back patio.

I drove from Oro Valley after hearing that this was a great place. And it is! It's been a few years since I adopted my one-eyed senior kitty from here, and I have recommended this group to many friends since then.
It's so clean there; kitties are grouped so I could get right to who I was looking for; and the kitties did not seem traumatized in the least bit so it was easy to see their true personality! The volunteers... bless them for making a difference... and without them, I wouldn't have met the coolest cat ever.

In early March, shortly before the Covid 19 shutdown, I attended Continental School's Thank You Volunteers brunch. They do this every Spring to thank the many many volunteers who spend their time helping the kids in so many ways. I was there representing TALGV's Read to a Dog program. We provide reading support to the 3rd graders with our dogs.
I was thrilled to hear the asst principal tell the audience of the Huge impact our program has had on his own son. Prior to participating in 3rd grade Read to a Dog, his son had little to no interest in books or reading. It was difficult for him. But after....what a change! He loves to read and now is more interested in getting a new book instead of a new toy! A great shout out to all TALGV Read to a Dog volunteers and their doggies!! We've missed seeing the kids, and are hoping we can return to school in the fall. K Simmons

As one of the volunteer cat "socializers", I of course adore all of the wonderful cats in our care. The friendly outgoing one, the playful ones and lap-sitters. But I am especially drawn to the timid, shy, fearful, anxious ones. I will sit with them, talk or sing to them, and gently move closer until they say no further. It is so rewarding after weeks, months and sometimes years, to finally have them come out and trust us humans. And find their forever homes.

While looking to adopt a dog at The Animal League of Green Valley (TALGV), a non-profit referred to us by friends, we saw a handsome, nervous puppy, about four months old. A volunteer sat on the floor beside his crate, patting him, reassuring him. A desert stray, he'd come to the door of a local resident covered in cactus thorns. That kind person knew of TALGV, and the pup had arrived there not even hours before we began our adoption quest. Others saw him and expressed interest before we arrived. We put our names on a waiting list. TALGV, aware of how young and adoptable the dog was, set out to locate his owner. After a week of extensive searching, no owner could be located. The others in line ahead of us bowed out, deciding he was too young and energetic for them. Our application received approval from TALGV, and we adopted our Australian Shepherd/retriever mix puppy. The compassionate support continued, with food, collar, leash and toys to take home, a microchip and subscription, follow-up vaccinations, neutering and basic obedience training. TALGV screens adoptive families thoroughly, understands with open arms when pets need a home or re-home, cares lovingly for the animals in their keeping, celebrates when pet finds an adoptive home, and follows up to make sure placed pets are safe, secure and loved.

We learned about the Animal League Of Green Valley because we live about 1/2 mile from it. We were scouting out volunteer opportunities for my husband and I - being animal lovers, we thought of TALGV. We visited several times, both the shelter and The Attic store (my husband loves 2nd hand shopping). On all our visits we were so impressed by the caring compassionate people we encountered there. Then we saw someone who captured our hearts - a 4 year old 18lb black mixed terrier - his name was “Thor” but the volunteer caring for him said “that name doesn’t really fit him, so I call him Tux” - as in Tuxedo due to the white markings on his chest and feet. I wouldn’t say it was instant love, on all our parts as Tux was rather aloof when we first met. He’d been surrendered to TALGV because his family moved out of state. We’re so grateful to this family and TALGV- as Tux is an amazing companion for us. He’s a composite of all the good in all our previous dogs. Previously our dogs found us - showed up on our property in need of a home and we felt blessed with every one of them. When our last dog passed away in 2017 we didn’t think we were ready for another dog because we had loved “Skitter” so much. But there was “Tux” just waiting for us to choose him. He was very well cared for in his 10 days at TALGV. We’re grateful for their commitment to providing loving care and attention to all the animals in their care. But we’re especially grateful that we found Tux.

We didn’t find our Special Girl, she found us!! There was a request for Fosters, with the Pandemic, so we replied. We had lost our Precious Bell-la and moved to this area a year ago, and had a hole in our Hearts we never thought we would fill. She was a small Chi- mix, so we were seeking a smaller dog. All were taken, even most of the larger dogs, it Kim suggested we look at Dallas, a Boxer/Catahoula mix. One blue eye, one brown, she melted our hearts the moment we saw her, but were cautious because of her age and size. Well, we decided, “ It is only temporary” and we would be helping the Facility and helping Dallas.
Well, needless to say, we are Foster Failures! She’s is a special girl, and the Staff and Volunteers all were so helpful and happy to see Dallas, when we took her back for shots and instructions for her continued care. They are compassionate and Kind and do their very best to help the Animals and People like us, in need of a Furry Friend. Thanks you all, and Thank you Kim, for seeing what we could not see, in this amazing Girl! She just needed a loving home with consistency and care!

We are over 500 volunteers who just love the animals and put their happiness first. We are richly rewarded with wagging tails, purrs and sloppy kisses. What could be better?!

I myself clean in the dog area and foster dogs. I have done this for 13 years. I know how much individual consideration each animal receives. Does one dog like grated carrots on his food? Is another too shy to leave his room? We accommodate all idiosyncrasies!

I used to volunteer as a cleaner in the dog area. We kept the inside kennels very clean. The dogs also had covered outside runs. I was amazed at all the programs they had to help the dogs and cats. Very good medical care, large foster program, behavior training for special cases among others. They did everything they could to get an animal adopted to a good home.
They had a resale store that provided a significant portion of the finances needed to fund the rescue. I continue to donate to this worthy cause even though I no longer live in Arizona.

The shelter is always clean and the cats are brushed and fawned over by many volunteers who spend their time making them feel loved. I have been a volunteer at the Animal League of Green Valley for many years during the winter months. The care, concern and love for the animals...(in my case, the dogs, both big and small)...is what brings me back year after year. Our coordinators make sure that their every need is met, be it medical attention, their fear, training and diet. We are encouraged to socialize, play and groom each and every one, who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves in our shelter. The staff prepare each puppy, adult and all in between, to be, hopefully, adopted by the screened, perfect fit, person(s). It is my happy place and a wonderful nonprofit facility.

I have volunteered here for 10 years. It is a no kill shelter that cares 100% for each and every animal that it accepts with love, patience, and individual care plan. Not one size fits all. Trainers work with public and potential adoptors to ensure the right fit for their life style and family life. This is true for puppies, disabled dogs. Aged dogs, whatever. No one is paid to work here from president on down. They work here because of their love and dedication for the animals.

This no-kill shelter is an all-volunteer run animal rescue organization. Every dollar donated goes to support the animals. I chose to become a dog volunteer because I had never owned a dog and wanted to experience working with a dog. I started out as a dog walker and then joined a team of volunteers helping to socialize and rehabilitate dogs with behavioral issues. My special interest is the larger dogs who have the hardest time getting adopted. I have been doing this for 6 years and the dogs have become some of my best friends along with the community of volunteers. The dogs have taught me patience, perseverance, unconditional love and forgiveness. During this time of the Covid virus the dogs and my community of volunteers have kept me healthy and sane.

The Animal League of Green Valley, run 100% by dedicated volunteers, is an amazing rescue.

Providing a loving and safe refuge for animals who find themselves homeless, perhaps because their devoted parent recently passed away or became ill and could no longer provide care, or because someone didn't value their life and dumped them in the desert. All are welcomed by loving volunteers, and provided the care they need while awaiting a second chance.

My husband and I adopted two beautiful, adult black cats from TALGV. Many consider black cats unlucky and overlook them; most people want kittens. Our beautiful boys are loving, full of energy and LUCKY!

Thank you TALGV for taking in our beautiful boys, when their ill mother could no longer care for them. Without you, we wouldn't have our boys.

I can't say enough good things about The Animal League of Green Valley.
Several years ago someone dumped an old Shar-Pei in our rural area of Southern AZ. She somehow made it to our property and my wife and I found her. We had 2 dogs at the time and literally had no room for her. We called the Animal League of Green Valley for help.
They helped us get her into a boarding kennel and said they would take her in. Within a few days it was determined that she needed Vet care. . She had a few wounds and was not well. Their Vet patched her up and said she was sick and they kept her in their facility. She passed away a couple of weeks later but we knew that she was well cared for and comfortable at the end of her life. Almost all of their help was given at their expense and we were so grateful for their help and care.
I cannot say enough good things about The Animal League of Green Valley. They have my support and I hope yours too.

The Animal League of Green Valley is full of dedicated volunteers. These people live for finding perfect homes for their dogs and cats. They absolutely love what they do, and they truly get to know the animals in the shelter. Two years ago, we adopted our dog, Matilda. She was brought back twice because of her strength and energy. The volunteers were completely transparent with us and Matilda's story, which we appreciated. They also helped us transition Matilda to our home. Her trainer gave me her cell number to call if we had any questions, which I did and was grateful! Now, we can't imagine life without Matilda as part of our family. The Animal League of Green Valley does wonderful work in our community, and they deserve as much recognition as they can get. Sincerely, Melissa N.

I have been a Volunteer at the Animal League of Green Valley for 6 1/2 years - and have LOVED every minute of it !
I started as a "dog walker" then became a Dog Care Coordinator about 3 years ago.
There is so much joy when you are able to find that perfect "Forever Home" for our animals, or when we can take in an animal whose owner can no longer care for him/her.
We truly get paid in "wags and kisses"

I have volunteered and also adopted 2 senior dogs and 1 cat from TALGV. They are a multi-faceted organization that adopts out animals, runs an outreach program, and offers training and spay/neuter clinics. They have a thrift store in which all sales go toward animal care. They are all volunteer and everyone there is totally dedicated to the well-being of the animals. They are a huge part of the community here.

This is the most wonderful animal shelter! I adopted my cat from The Animal League of Green Valley in January 2020, and the volunteers made the process very easy. Love abounds here, and the volunteers clearly care about the animals, striving to make their stay in the shelter as stress-free as possible. I will adopt from them again, and highly recommend them.

As a volunteer, I love the care that is given to the animals. Not just in the feeding and in the cleaning of area where the animals are housed but also in the socializing that is done. All the volunteers I’ve met here love animals and want the absolute best for them. Another wonderful thing about TALGV is that they do their utmost best to place even the more difficult animals (those with medical or temperament issues) into good homes. Every animal is given a chance at finding a good home

Love The Animal League of Green Valley. And the Attic Thrift. They started out with a mission statement to guarantee a home for your pet when you passed. Around 1999, they expanded their mission statement to help the Animal Control and Humane Society, yo help families with altering pets, and with taking from the public in emergencies.

They are a special place in our community.

I adopted my cat, Mantis, here back in February. The staff was so great and let me see all the rooms and kitties and were very patient with me. They also took their time answering my list of questions and made me feel really comfortable and safe with my decision to adopt my first cat. They also gifted my some toys, blankets, food and treats for Mantis. He’s the best pet ever and I will never forget this great experience.

The Animal League of Green Valley is the best place to adopt a new member for your family. A few years back we adopted a cat, Zoey, and later an abandoned pooch, Nancy. She had a condition that lost muscle mass in her head and looked horrible.. BUT she was so horrible that she actually looked cute. Well, we had about three years before we lost her to cancer, in spite of surgeries to get rid of her bumps. She also had terrible eyesight.
Nancy turned out to be the BEST street dog EVER.. pedigree? NOT, but she had a big heart, she was a fighter till the end, and really the best dog ever. I just wish we would have had more time with her. We loved her a lot, and she made sure you knew she loved you back. We still miss her. Nancy reminded us that pedigree means nothing - shelter dogs' hearts are just waiting to be loved. We are blessed to have two shelter pets.

This great organization functions with nearly all volunteer help from among the citizens of a retirement community in Southern Arizona. They pretty much make sure that the animals in the community never have to be euthanized if they are at all adoptable. I got my beautiful Bella there and she came complete with a small square knitted "pad", made by some senior volunteer no doubt, on which she loves (and any cat would love) to sleep.

4 years ago, I adopted a little guy with severe allergy issues. I say he is allergic to “the world”! TALGV, at the time of adoption, agreed to pay all vet bills and medications related to his allergy problems. They have kept their promise and made it possible to address the issues head on. I could not have afforded to do this on my own and therefore, has given Teddy an opportunity to live a life pretty much free of conditions due to his allergies. Currently, He is on 2 meds and a special diet which is a very long way from where we were 4 years ago.
Thanks to TALGV, they have been patient over the years in our search to find the right meds and food and continue to support my efforts to keep our little guy comfortable!

Approximately 18 years ago I did the off-site adoptions for TALGV to get my animal fix. I had promised my husband no more dogs, but two years prior to his death by a terminal brain tumor he suggested we get a little dog. Looking back he wanted a companion in place for me! We adopted Dieter, who was saved twice by TALGV. He had been shot with BBs in the head and neck and then dumped in the desert (I believe near Amado). After surgery he was taken in by TALGV and adopted by a woman and he ate rat poison put out to kill pack rats. She took him back to TALGV who found him unable to breath and bleeding internally. Jean Davis (President at the time) took him to Tucson where they drained the blood from his chest, put it thru dialysis and back into his legs. He was only six months old, and nodding vitamin K pills and eye drops, when we adopted him after an extensive interview. While it took him months to begin to trust people, he is now six years old and a sweet, very smart lovable dog. THANK YOU TALGV for saving this precious life and the new man in my household.

I have been donating used items and cash to TALGV for several years now. Their thrift shop helps fund the costs of their no kill shelter. I love to shop there. Every person I come in contact with there is a kind and compassionate person that donates their love and time to needy animals. For the first time, I adopted a pet from them on January 31, 2020. My previous dog had died almost 2 years before I found my new forever dog, Patsy. I got free vet care with her adoption for the first year. I cannot say enough good things about this organization, they are truly a lifesaver for the community, and for me.

I have worked at the Animal League for maybe 6 years (?). I love the people I work with; love Michele, the woman whom I report to. All of the volunteers I know have the animal's best interests at heart, and most have pets themselves.
Due to the pandemic, we didn't work as many hours this past season, but I can't wait to get back to AZ, as I miss The League, and all those whom I work with!

In late January I was ready to adopt a new friend and I started looking at the Animal League. I believe in letting the dog select me and had more or less decided on a puppy. Then I met Heidi in the reception area. She came to me and my search was over. The Animal League made the process of adopting her easy and as stress free on the dog as possible. The volunteers love their work and and the animals they care for.

I have been a volunteer at TALGV for about two years. I have never seen a volunteer or staff member who did not give their all for the animals in residence. The animals are seen as not just as strays , relinquished or abandaoned but sentient beings who deserve love and care. I have seen dogs come to TALGV who have given up hope. The love and care they receive has made eyes shine and tails wag. When there is interest in adoption, great care is given to provide the shelter animal with a home that will be safe and he/she will be well cared for. Animals who upon arrival need medical care receive appropriate care as per their needs to, if possible return them to health.

I adopted my kitty, Diva last month. (her name was Magic at the shelter) She was found at just two weeks old and fostered with love until the day I came to take her home. The most wonderful, loving, socialized little girl I've ever seen.

I continue to bring Diva in for needed vaccine's at no cost and her spaying will be in August! All for $45! The vet tech also trimmed her nails without me even mentioning it. Such a wonderful, caring place.

Thank you for all you do!
