I met the wonderful members of the Animal Defense League of Washington County when adopting one of their extra special cats. He may have been labeled a little difficult to handle, but it was love at first sight & he is a great addition to our family, where he’s living his best life! My family & I were so impressed with the work the ADL does in our community, that we have attended meetings, volunteered & donated to this wonderful organization.
We adopted out very loving cat, Millie, from the ADL of Washing County, VA in February of 2016. She was flea free, litter box trained and a pure cuddle bug. We had suffered a devastating loss of another cat about a year earlier and were reluctant to add another cat to our family for fear of more heartbreak. Millie was just what the doctor ordered for our family. She helped us learn it was okay to love a furbaby again and she is a big part of our family. Thanks to the ADL for all they do!
Over the years, I have adopted several beautiful, loving and lovable kitties from ADL. The people there are so devoted, caring and special. They give so much of themselves and time and love to pets in need, They are the best!
We live out the county and it is not uncommon to find "dumped" pets wandering around seeking food and shelter. They have always needed spayed or neutered among other things, and ADL has come to our rescue in helping get these babies taken care of EVERY TIME. Sometimes the Director will bring out a humane trap, sometimes work with a Veterinarian to accommodate a special need. We've helped dogs get a proper outdoor house and tracked down many a tomcat. They've a great program for Barn Cats and other feral situations. I am always so grateful to ADL. There is no way we could afford to help all these animals and I would be heartbroken and helpless without ADL's assistance.
When we got a little puppy from the animal shelter I had to have her spayed but didn’t have the amount necessary. I was told to contact the Animal Defense League of Washington County and they would help me with the cost. I did so and they did help me and I will be forever grateful. They are a great organization, always caring for animals.
Our best friend Gus was brought to us from the Animal Defense League. We adopted him as a kitten and a member of the ADL brought him to our home personally, sat and visited with us, and (since this was our first cat) helped us check around to make sure none of our plants were toxic and that there weren't any other kitten hazards.
He was so well taken care of and carefully socialized while with the ADL that he has grown into the best cat I've ever met. He loves people and gets along great with other cats AND dogs. We couldn't imagine not having him.
ADL is a compassionate group of individuals working as a team to address the problem of pet overpopulation. Through education, spay and neuter assistance, and their humane and well organized Trap Neuter and Release (TNR) programs, they are reducing the amount of unwanted animals in our area and ultimately the senseless killing of adoptable, loving cats and dogs. The ADL is a much needed and effective resource for homeless pets in southwest Virginia.
The Animal Defense League of Washington County is wonderful! They rescued and facilitated our adoption of this beautiful baby back in 2014... She had been horribly injured as a kitten and subsequently lost a front leg, but due to the kindness and care of those involved with her rescue, she made a fantastic recovery. Now she rules the house! Her name was listed as “Triple” in the original adoption listing, but we started calling her Holly after she pulled a faux-holly Christmas wreath out of the closet and made a nest in it, haha. It breaks my heart to think of how her precious little life would’ve ended if not for the generosity of her rescuers. She’s brought so much joy to our lives. And she helps my daughter do her homework (see attached pics)! Thank you, Animal Defense League, for saving these lost and hurting souls and giving them another chance at a happy life.
**edited to add: Linda Fritsch was the member who assisted us with the adoption, and she was very kind and helpful through the whole process. Thanks again, Linda!
When I moved to Washington County 7 years ago I wanted to adopt two cats that would get along well, snuggle lots, and leave my yarn alone. ADL helped me find the two perfect cats, and we've been happily living together ever since!
Animal defense league has helped me with the costs involved in having several feral cats spayed/neutered. With their help, I am able to have even more cats altered. Thank you, ADL.
This is NOT a rescue although sometimes rescues do happen. I have adopted 2 from them that are the light of my house. One of these was a male found at a feral colony at age of 12 weeks and could not be returned to the colony because of construction. They kept him for 3 years trying to find him a home, taking him to Pet Smart, as well as posting him on Pet Finders. They would have kept him for life, tending to all his medical needs and basic care, plus socialization.
Instead of rescue, it has a mission statement of reducing the need for rescue by helping with low cost spay/neuter of pets to residents of SW VA and NE TN. This organization can also help meet emergency needs to try to keep pets with their family in times of temporary duress.
I was so impressed when I met them with intention to adopt 2 of their older cats that I have also become a volunteer and even started going to the monthly meetings. Signing up is NOT something I do lightly. I tend to be skeptical and do some homework before becoming involved in anything.
These people do good work and far exceed my expectation. Lack of funds is an ongoing problem for every nonprofit listed here but I am going to throw my hat in anyway. As individuals and as a group, they/we give it our all to help solve the pet overpopulation that floods our county and city animal control facilities with networking, learning, and real personal effort. Adding a picture of my new family members.
It asks for role served, but one doesn't cover it.. I am a volunteer, a donor,AND a client served.
