My college student was very excited to join Ayuda's efforts based on their mission statement: "to empower young people to become agents of change in diabetes communities around the world." With this in mind, she raised a lot of money to participate in the Ayuda Program in the Dominican Republic as a volunteer. She was very disappointed in her experience. During her stay she only had one day where she went into the community and spend the day educating the local youth about diameters. There was a lot of down time and planning time. Most days when she went out to the community it was just to hand out flyers about a race which could have easily been done by locals. The other day that felt worthwhile was the day of the race where she was able to interact and play with the children in the race and take their glucose levels. The organizers of the race from her description seemed to be a wealthy group of people from the Dominican Republic who did not particularly encourage the volunteers from the U.S. to get involved in the community. She and we were very disappointed in the experience. I would not recommend this program unless they are able to ensure more involvement with the youth about diabetes education.
