Mission: The American Vegan Society promotes a compassionate, healthful, and sustainable lifestyle, empowering individuals through education and advocacy—since 1960.
Target demographics: AVS serves as a leading source of accurate vegan information for those inquiring about the lifestyle, whether in person or via media channels. We provide positive, helpful encouragement to anyone transitioning to vegan. Our goal is to increase public knowledge and understanding of veganism in the US. We continue the vision of AVS founder Jay Dinshah.
Geographic areas served: primarily the United States, but our social media channels reach around the globe.
Programs: 1) Welcome to Veganism: Providing educational resources for new vegans and the vegan-curious. AVS provides digital and in-person resources to welcome people to a vegan lifestyle including: American Vegan magazine, available in print and PDF, a free monthly e-newsletter, www.AmericanVegan.org website, and an active social media presence. AVS also continues to share the legacy of founder Jay Dinshah through his writings and recordings, including his Powerful Vegan Messages book and his recorded videos, essays, and speeches. Jay’s ethical beacon shines brightly today welcoming new vegans into the movement. 2) Building National Vegan Community: This program helps people who are already vegan find like-minded individuals and groups to engage with for support and celebration. AVS provides community celebrations including Vegan Cuisine Month, Dynamic Harmlessness Day, and Vegan Synergy Month—all celebrated annually worldwide—and local events such as American Vegan Garden Party at AVS headquarters and Philly Vegan Awards. In addition, AVS offers Vegan Information Points (VIPs): friendly local guides across the U.S. and abroad; the American Vegan Speakers Bureau: quality presenters available to deliver great vegan speeches at events and conferences; Vegan Synergy: collaboration with 35 organizations; and Vegan Trademark certification: product labeling with a distinct logo that makes it easy to identify vetted vegan products. 3) American Vegan Center (AVC): The AVC is a welcoming hub in Philadelphia’s historic district for vegans and pre-vegans, international visitors and locals, offering reliable information about vegan living and cuisine. At AVC, we host engaging activities such as cooking demos, open mic nights, lectures, activist networking, and veg history walking tours. This international tourist attraction is AVS’s single biggest program; a unique combination of museum, information, community center, and delicious vegan food.
