Causes: Environment, Environmental Education
Mission: To provide educational and interpretive programs and information about the natural environment, principally in the american river parkway. Main program is the effie yeaw nature center (eync), operated by the organization, which provides free public access to our natural history museum and local trails, within the ancil hoffman county park, six days per week. Staff and volunteers maintain trails and provide free nature interpretation. Special free family oriented programs offered every staurday and sunday to encourage understanding of nature by all. Non-releaseable native raptors, reptiles and amphibians are available for viewing. A demonstration butterfly garden and a native plant garden are maintained by volunteers and are accessible to all visitors. The discovery store within the museum sells nature related gifts and books published by the organization. Annual museum visitation exceeds 40,000, made possible by strong volunteer effort.
Programs: Community programs: nature education programs are designed to provide non-school opportunities, such as summer and holiday nature camps, family programs, and learning from experts through adult nature workshops, lectures and field trips. Groups such as scouts, boys and girls clubs and meet-up groups bring large numbers of young people on weekends, holidays and summers. Major events including 'naturefest' (produced in cooperation with twenty four additional participating organizations) and bird & breakfast combine a nature, in collaboration with the sacramento audubon society, focus with hands on activities. Adult only classes are offered almost every month with topics ranging from beginning birdwatching to natural history of rattlesnakes. A semi-annual university of california naturalist certification program is operated by the effie yeaw nature center. All programs have minimal fees to encourage participation. Scholarships are also available from previously received restricted contributions.
school programs: effie yeaw nature center offers three high quality field trips for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, involving observation, exploration, hands on activities and animal encounters. All programs teach to scientific standards observed by school districts. Seven outreach programs involve the naturalist visiting the classroom with live animals or native american maidu cultural materials for hands on learning. Three maidu cultural programs use a replica maidu village to bring traditions and skills of the native people to students. Our urban nature program uses restricted funds to pay cost of any program for qualified classes in title 1 schools. All other programs charged minimal fees to encourage all schools within the region. Over 577 school programs provided in 2016. Over 18,000 elementary school students received one of our education programs during this year.
other programs: the organization researches and publishes nature guides and historical reference books about the lower american river area. These are sold wholesale and through the eync discovery store. Classrooms at the eync location are available to other organizations to rent for facilitated sessions, presentations or special meetings.
