I have had the privilege of working for the American Red Cross in Jacksonville, Florida for the past nine years. During that time much has changed, but never the compassion and care that each and every staff member provides from the heart to victims of natural disasters, our military and veterans, and both financial and blood donors. Seven years ago a gentleman came in to our chapter with his fourteen year old daughter. They had escaped a fire, but the man's wife did not. I was the receptionist at the time. The only thing that I knew to do was to gather them in my arms and tell them how terribly sorry I was. I also did my fair share of praying on the side. At the time I didn't know how much good a hug could do, but every year I hear from this man who tells me how he and his daughter (who is now a wife and mother) are doing. Stories like this and many, many more are why I work for such a wonderful organization. I also volunteer when needed.
