Mission: The Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross was founded in 1898 in the midst of the Spanish-American War. Miss Margaret Jacks and Miss Lou Henry, who later became Mrs. Herbert Hoover, presided over the first organizational meeting on June 7, 1898, which was held at the residence of Mrs. C.D. Henry in Monterey. The first order of business included making bandages for the soldiers of the Spanish-American War. By the first annual business meeting of October 4, 1898, the local society had grown to over 43 members.
The First World War transformed the American Red Cross into a powerful social force. Red Cross volunteers mobilized and met every troop train passing through the county, offered the troops refreshments and encouragement.
Volunteers continue their work today in providing disaster services, teaching CPR, First Aid and Water Safety training, offering blood drives and blood pressure screenings, providing the emergency communications link to members of our Armed Forces and providing International Services like tracing to those separated because of war or changing world conditions.
