Mission: The American Red Cross Bay Area, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
700 times a year, families in the Bay Area call on the Red Cross for help in the aftermath of a disaster.
1,300 times a year, Red Cross youth are in classrooms in the Bay Area, training younger students in basic first aid and safety skills.
All of these programs are funded entirely by donations by the people of the Bay Area.
Programs: The American Red Cross Bay Area's many valuable community services include things like our Disaster and Health & safety programs. Disaster response, preparedness, and planning is our number one priority. Every day the Red Cross responds to an average of two fires or other emergencies in our six county areas. All of the assistance provided to victims of disaster is free. We provide emergency assistance which, can include food, shelter and medical care as well as funds for essential household furnishings, occupational tools, and health needs. We also provide mental health counseling to disaster victims to help them cope with the emotional turmoil that can follow an unexpected tragedy. Last year the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter helped over 1,200 families suffering loss after a disaster. Knowing that many times information can save lives, we also give classes in accident prevention, injury control, and emergency response such as CPR and standard first aid. During the course of FY 98-99 our chapters health and safety programs trained more than 180,000 local Bay area residents in lifesaving skills. The American Red Cross also runs blood drives, providing over half of the nations blood supply and operating 45 blood regions across the country.
