As a nonprofit association dedicated to the clinical mental health counseling profession, AMHCA is small but very determined and mighty.The mission of AMHCA is to enhance the profession of clinical mental health counseling through advocacy, education and collaboration.

What is a clinical mental health counselor?
Clinical mental health counseling is a truly distinct healthcare profession with national standards for education, training and clinical practice. Clinical mental health counselors (CMHC) are highly-skilled professionals who provide flexible, patient-centric therapy. CMHCs used evidence-based practices which include traditional psychotherapy with research validated approaches to create positive treatment alliance and a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution. A licensed clinical mental health counselor has met or exceeded the following professional qualifications:
CMHCs have completed a master's or doctorate degree in clinical counseling with coursework equalling a minimum of 60+hrs. Licensed CMHCs complete a minimum of two years post-master's clinical work under the supervision of a licensed clinical mental health counseling professional; and successfully passed a required state licensure examination.
