Mission: Founded in 1950, the American Hibiscus Society (AHS) evolved from confusion surrounding varieties of H. rosa-sinensis. Hybridizers named cultivars whatever they wanted, resulting in multiple varieties with disparate traits having the same name. The founders established a register of names and descriptions, and expanded into making proven methods of care and culture available to the public. As interest increased, chapters formed to provide localized information and to provide a forum for exchanging ideas and results. Annual hibiscus shows, sponsored by local chapters, emerged as major attractions in communities across Florida, Texas, and the US and British Virgin Islands. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the AHS today has members in nearly every state and in over 40 countries around the world.
