S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to fostering philanthropic support for the conservation, dissemination, and enjoyment of the value, excellence, and history of spanish, european, and classical greco-roman cultural heritage safeguarded in the prado museum in madrid, spain, for the benefit of all humanity.
Programs: American friends of the prado museum is particularly focused on contributing to the sustainment of the important artistic treasures in the prado museum in madrid, spain, and promoting further knowledge of the prado museum and spanish art. During 2016, the portrait of philip iii, a previously unknown work by diego velazquez, was donated to the organization. The piece is an oil on canvas considered a preparatory portait for the artist's epic composition of the expulsion of the moriscos lost in the alcazar fire of 1734 in madrid. The gift is a landmark commencement for the organization in its mission to support, preserve and disseminate knowledge of the excellent european artistic heritage held by the museo del prado.
