Mission: The purpose of the society shall be to promote and foster an interest in the study of united states and foreign first day covers; to promote the interest of the general public in philately and postal research; to encourage the study of postal history through the study of philatelic materials; to maintain archives of philatelic materials for research by interested persons; to sponsor and assist other organizations with a like or similar interest so as to encourage a wider knowledge of postal history by the general public; to advise postal and other authorities as to the interests of first day cover servicers and collectors.
Programs: The annual afdcs cachetmakers contest recognizes the best first day cover designs in 18 categories including hand-painted, hand-colored, computer-produced, rookie of the year, and those targeting youth.
afdcs published eight issues of its award-winning publication, first days. The magazine is full-color, filled with articles and features covering all areas of first day cover collecting to enlighten beginners to advanced readers.
afdcs held its annual show and convention, americover. The three day event is a world series of philately show and the exhibits are nearly all first day covers. The convention features the most fdc dealers of any show in the world, a major auction of first day covers, a cachetmakers contest, meetings, seminars, a youth area, social gatherings, and free admission to all.
