Mission: The members of the american college of nurse-midwives (acnm) are dedicated to improving and maintaining the health and well being of women and child-bearing families through the provision of high quality nurse-midwives care; (see continuation on schedule o)to support and assist in the development of midwifery services and educational programs, in association with allied professional groups; to evaluate and accredit midwifery educational programs; to determine the eligibility of individuals to practice as midwives; to facilitate and coordinate the efforts of midwives who, in the public interest, provide quality services to individuals and child-bearing families; and to establish channels for interpretation of midwifery to allied professional and non-professional groups on a regional, national and international basis.
Programs: Global outreach - as the professional organization of american nurse-midwives & certified midwives, acnm and its department of global outreach (dgo) are uniquely positioned to lead efforts in strengthening the profession of midwives and other health care workers around the world. Dgo has developed invaluable institutional knowledge of the components required to build a profession that creates competent and qualified providers. By calling on the programmatic and technical expertise of its staff and membership, acnm can provide support for the full range of clinical maternal and newborn health topics. The following are areas of expertise: development & implementation of in-service training systems, integrated pre-service strengthening, strengthening of health professions, & community education & mobilization.
meetings and exhibits - in 2016, midwives focused on elevating women's health: with the help of midwives, women's health care can become a priority. Midwives can elevate women's health by helping them demand and obtain the high quality health care they deserve. Acnm sponsors two professional meetings each year. The midwifery works meeting occurs in october and focuses on the business aspects of professional practice. In may, the acnm 60th annual meeting & exhibition in albuquerque, midwives and other women's health care experts convened to continue elevating the quality of care we provide and expanding our reach even further into mainstream care for women across the country. The albuquerque meeting celebrates our diversity of practice, perspectives, and backgrounds, and calls on us to channel these strengths in new and more effective ways to enhance the health care of women throughout the lifespan.
midwifery services - the department of professional practice and health policy provides leadership in the development of resources for the acnm membership related to professional practice issues and health care policy and reform. The department develops & implements programs that offer members and others timely and accurate assistance with the practice of midwifery, including the development of professional practice resources, formal presentations, continuing education and the promotion and distribution of research. The professional practice and health policy department is the "client service" arm of acnm and serves a diverse constituency that includes consumers, members, prospective members, students, policymakers, employers and potential employers, health care organizations, researchers and the media. Areas of focus include: professional liability, scope of practice, clinical privileges, reimbursement and credentialing, reentry into practice, health care policy, and maternal and infant health. The department is committed to assisting with the development of education programs that help members to expand their core competency. The department also has the responsibility for the oversight and conduct of national and international advocacy on health policy.
