Mission: To assure that dermatologists have access to the highest quality education, research and innovations in the field, and that patients and the public have access to the highest quality medical and surgical dermatologic care and to information regarding prevention, care and treatment of dermatologic conditions. To facilitate the efficient delivery of quality dermatologic care, develop evidence-based clinical guidelines, and promote research in and prevention of diseases of the skin, hair, and nails.
Programs: Scientific assembly - this includes the annual and summer scientific and educational meetings. These meetings are attended by more than 19,000 dermatologists, other physicians, allied medical personnel, and others. These two programs combined present more than 500 individual educational sessions providing results of current research and recent advances in the diagnosis, management and treatment of dermatologic conditions and diseases, and address issues of patient safety, quality of care and practice management improvement.
communication & publications - a range of programs focus on improving public health by providing information about dermatologic conditions and the importance of skin care as a component of overall health. A primary focus is on the goal of reducing mortality from skin cancer in 10 years and its incidence in 30 years. These efforts are carried out through use of patient information pamphlets, a public web site, public information campaigns, free skin cancer screenings, grants to support building of shade structures, and other activities. Estimates are that more than 1,500,000 individuals have been reached annually through these efforts.
education and evaluation: in addition to the annual and summer meetings, as an accredited continuing education provider, the academy presented three regional dermatology courses and resident practice management course which had combined attendance of almost 1,000. We also produce a variety of enduring education materials (in print, digital and web based formats) as well as self assessment products and maintenance of certification self-assessment products to support dermatologists in staying current in practice and medical certification requirements.
