Mission: Alternate ROOTS was founded in 1976 by a group of Southeastern performing artists who were creating original community-based work. The founding members believed that although the South's creative artists are one of our region's greatest strengths, the lack of services for small professional companies and individual artists was limiting the growth and development of community-based art.Today, ROOTS' programs and services address 3 major goals:1) Promote communication, networking, and the sharing of information and resources by artists and presenters with limited financial resources and working in geographic or artistic isolation;2) Nurture artistic development, supporting the creation and development of new work.3) Encourage communities and artists to engage in mutual efforts, enabling artists and their community partners to create long-term, sustainable and deep relationships.
Programs: For the year ended december 31, 2014, roots operated the following programs:(i)partners in action (pia)pia is roots flagship re-granting program supporting that part of the mission that is the intersection of arts, community, and activism. Artists and their community partners identify an issue, challenge, or need in their community. Site visits are conducted to ascertain the strength and commitment of the partners, and their readiness to undertake the work. Roots then selects a small number of projects to work with where roots serves as a third partner, leveraging their internal capacity. In addition to direct support, from $5,000 - $20,000, we offer technical assistance to support logistics, administration, finances, fiscal sponsorship, or marketing and publicity as needed. (ii)artistic assistance (aa)aa professional development provides small grants from $250-$2500 to support the professional development needs of individual artists. Grants have been provided to buy new material, or software, or to attend a conference or workshop. This programs goal is to further the artistry of roots members. (iii)aa project developmentaa project development is a relatively new focus offering artists grants from $1000-$5000 to support the development of new work. This program is mission critical as it speaks to that part of the mission of artists who create original work. A material difference between roots members and most other network or service organizations in the field is the funding. Funds to develop a project, especially for individual artists, are often the most difficult support to secure. There are only a handful of foundations, or government arts programs that individual artists are eligible to apply to. Thus for southern artists, artistic assistance project development is a rare opportunity to fund new work. . (iv)aa presenters subsidiesaa presenters subsidies offers community-based presenters a subsidy to present artists. Fee support for these presenters can make the difference between being able to bring an artist to their community or not. (v)roots week annual meeting and artists retreatfor 39 years, the roots week annual meeting has been the organizations signature event. Attracting more than two hundred artists and cultural organizers to the mountains of north carolina annually, it is the place to show new work, share work in progress, build new relationships, and create collaborations. It is also a place where lifelong friendships have been created. For six days artists have a chance to relax and bask in an event that is totally theirs. Roots week is a one of-a-kind event.
