Mission: Alma backyard farms (abf) is a start-up non-profit social enterprise that aims to create unique and dynamic opportunities in urban farming for women and men who were formerly incarcerated to return and reintegrate home from prison with a renewed sense of interdependence as they give back by growing food in and for the communities of los angeles.
Programs: Abf provides a training program to previously incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth. The training program includes introductory lessons in landscape and design, horticulture and food production. Participants are trained to grow and distribute food to low-income families.
abf establishes urban farm plots to grow local and organic food for low-income families and socially conscious restaurants. The urban farm plots were setup by program participants. The urban farms are also grounds for training, education and food distribution.
clients participate in nutrition and food education in order to become agents of food justice. Abf provides healthy and nutritious meals, cooking demonstrations as part of its healthy food initiative.
