Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Economic Development, Ethnic & Immigrant Centers, Human Services, Immigration

Mission: The mission of the Alliance is to help refugees, immigrants, and low-income residents of Harris County become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. All services are offered with cultural competency to empower individuals, families, and communities to succeed.

Results: Since 1986, Alliance has grown to provide services to people of all ethnicities including over 6,500 individuals annually. Alliance is the largest refugee service provider in Texas in terms of range of services offered and number served. The agency resettled twice the number of individuals in FY 2009 as in FY 2008. The agency is also strengthening its position as a Community Development Corporation (CDC), providing economic development to the low-income community at large, by expanding its microenterprise program and its IDA matched savings program. The Alliance was recently approved as an SBA intermediate lender and is working to get this new program off the ground. In spite of the difficult economy, the agency met its employment placement goals for new arrivals, and continues to expand its network of employers. The interpreter department offers low-cost service in a wide range of languages while providing contract employment to local bilingual individuals including many Alliance clients. The adult literacy program continues to grow and meet all performance measures, serving both refugees and other community members.

Target demographics: The Alliance assists a diverse population of incoming refugees, immigrants, and low-income residents of Harris County

Programs: The Alliance provides a variety of family and social services, including refugee resettlement, job counseling and placement, youth empowerment services and healthy marriage counseling, case management, interpreter services, immigration consultation, driver’s education training, English-as-a-Second Language classes, a matched savings program (Individual Development Account or IDA) and microenterprise lending.
