Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Environmental Education, Forest Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection

Mission: The Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) is a U.S.-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is active in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon. Our mission is to conserve biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of Amazonian natural resources for the benefit of all those who live in and depend on the rainforest. Southeastern Peru is among the most biodiverse places on Earth and boasts a large number of expansive protected areas that shelter more species of plants and animals than almost anywhere else. However, widespread, uncontrolled resource extraction and climate change are presenting ever greater threats to the long-term health of the region’s rainforest ecosystem. Our research, reforestation, and education projects aim to document southeastern Peru’s plant and animal species and monitor their populations in the face of ongoing environmental change, restore degraded forests by building local capacity, and inspire the next generation of community and conservation leaders in the Amazon.

I volunteered in July 2019 and given the opportunity, would volunteer again in a heartbeat. Camping and assisting with research in the Peruvian Amazon was an incredible experience.

My experience in Asa was incredible, I was as a research resident in the Lepidoptera project, I learned a lot from the whole team, who do an extraordinary job, committed to conserving the forests, working with the community and the research work that is carried out. does there. I'm going to miss those reforestation Fridays, planting your trees in the Amazon jungle, it's like leaving your mark on the earth, I hope to return soon to be able to eat and see the fruits of everything that ASA as an organization will achieve.

They allowed me to exploit my creativity and achieve goals like those I could not have imagined, such as the publication of a scientific article. I am very grateful to this natural laboratory and I will always be amazed at the wonders it preserves.

I worked for six months as a volunteer with Alliance For a Sustainable Amazon and have high praise of the organization. ASA has ambitious and important goals for the sustainable development of the region and is working incredibly hard to meet them. The staff were supportive of my individual development and gave me the tools to help me succeed. The facilities and living arrangement exceeded my expectations and as a biologist, the rainforest was always a dynamic and exciting place to live. Since volunteering with ASA, the lessons I've learned and skills I've developed have stayed with me and helped progress my professional career and personal growth.

I visited Fincas Las Piedras, the field site for the NGO Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) for two weeks in 2017. The site is well run and lots of important work is being done there. ASA has contributed a substantial amount to our understandings of many ecological processes and organisms in southeastern Peru. They do great work with local communities, encouraging a love for the environment and promoting sustainable agriculture. This organization does lots of good in a very important part of the world!

I joined ASA on an excursion to Manu in 2018. The team was engaging and professional as well as fun. I learned a lot on that trip and ASA continues to educate me about the area through their ongoing work. Great organization!
