How this shelter has transformed in the past few years is nothing short of amazing! When I first moved to Cumberland, I had heard horror stories about the number of cats and dogs "put to sleep." Once I found out that the shelter was pursuing a no kill mission, I jumped on board as a volunteer. Primarily, I enjoyed taking the big dogs to the adoption events. I have had the privilege of seeing many great dogs placed in loving homes. I have also worked as a foster "parent." As a board member, I am able to do all of these things and be part of the future planning. I am astounded by the work of our Allegany County Animal Shelter staff, and I hope to continue to support their work as long as I can!
Innovative, dedicated , creative and committed. This organization has moved Allegany County Maryland's municipal shelter from an 85% kill rate to a 95% save rate and they go above and beyond to make their pet residents live in a healthy, stimulated environment.
They are just opening an on-site vet clinic and moving ahead next to improve their dog adoption space. If there was a rating above five, I would award it!
This is a great organization. The people in all the different roles are totally committed to make the shelter the best it can be for all the companion animals that are housed. The difference in the appearance and living conditions since the Foundation has been operating the shelter is like night and day. And the commitment to not destroy animals for space has proven to be correct. Just recently a dog that had been in the shelter for 3 years was adopted! My brother wanted to adopt a dog and we found a wonderful dog at the shelter. My brother named him Johnny Dollar. Johnny Dollar was very well taken care of at the shelter until he came home. And as a matter of fact, Johnny was included in a fund raiser and won a spot on one of 6 wine bottles that the foundation is selling. I could not be prouder of all who work and volunteer at the shelter.
Love ACAS! They are the only open door no kill shelter in Maryland. There is a big play yard for the dogs to get exercise in. There are volunteers who walk all the dogs every day. There is a catio so the cats can go in and out of their shelter space to enjoy the sun and fresh air. They have a vet and vet tech on staff and are renovating a building to house a vet clinic.
