Mission: A One-of-a-Kind Community, a Kind and Caring Mission The Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose core mission is to provide a safe, secure home for surviving spouses of retired enlisted U.S. Airmen. Located along the beautiful Emerald Coast of northwest Florida in Shalimar near Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field, apartments are available at Bob Hope Village, our independent living community, and at Hawthorn House, our assisted living and memory care residence located on the Bob Hope Village campus. Residents of Bob Hope Village and Hawthorn House must be 55 years of age or older. When space is available, the following are eligible for residency at Bob Hope Village or Hawthorn House: -Surviving spouses of U.S. Airmen who have died while on active duty -Surviving spouses of retired enlisted members of all U.S. military branches -Married couples with one or both being a retired enlisted U.S. Airman -Married couples with one or both being a retired enlisted U.S. military member -Mothers of active duty and retired enlisted U.S. Airmen In the event of the death of the active duty enlisted U.S. Air Force sponsor, surviving spouses under the age of 55 may be admitted for a maximum of one year to meet emergency needs. Although the Air Force Enlisted Village has expanded to provide a home for members of our military family, surviving spouses of retired enlisted U.S. Airmen continue to be the focus for our nonprofit organization. The retired enlisted U.S. Air Force surviving spouse with the greatest need is given priority to move to Bob Hope Village or Hawthorn House. Low pay and frequent military moves leave some spouses without careers, home equities, retirement plans or significant assets. Air Force surviving spouses requiring financial assistance live at Bob Hope Village or Hawthorn House among peers sharing memories of military life without the stigma normally associated with subsidized housing. At Bob Hope Village and Hawthorn House, all staff treat our beloved residents with the respect they would reserve for their own moms. The Air Force Enlisted Village is one of four official charities of the U.S. Air Force and is an affiliate of the Air Force Assistance Fund campaign that takes place February through May each year at all U.S. Air Force installations. The Air Force Enlisted Village is also one of seven worthy charities of the Air Force Sergeants Association. Like they say, it's like coming home. It's a privilege and a blessing to live here.

The Air Force Enlisted Village is a wonderful organization that treats all residents with kindness and respect. They have The Mom Rule that all of their employees follow so that they treat the residents like they would their own moms.

The residents at Bob Hope Village and Hawthorn House love their homes there and enjoy many activities. It's great that military spouses have a special place for their retirement years where they can can be with their peers and friends.

This assisted living facility treated my mother very badly after a new administrator was hired. They were found to have violated my mother's rights by the Florida Ombusdman and were cited for violations by the State of Florida for the way she was discharged and as recently as 8/29/16 for not providing medication to a patient. My mother contributed as a donor for many years and when she became ill they took her to the Eglin Emergency room and left her there with a note. We were shocked at their careless actions as were the doctors and nurses at the Eglin AFB hospital. Documentation can be found on the ACHA website of the violations:
http://apps.ahca.myflorida.com/dm_web/(S(re43tkeuetaruhm0cie2ucxp))/doc_results.aspx?file_number=11966523&provider_type=Assisted+Living+Facility&client_code=11&provider_name=HAWTHORN+HOUSE&lic_id=199310

The only good thing is the facility is beautiful and some of the employees were nice, so I give it one star.

I have volunteered at the AFEV for many years! The gratitude the residents show is so rewarding, that is the reason I choose to return. Anything that needs to be accomplished is done with joy and pride. The residents really do appreciate seeing the faces of the volunteers, no matter what age.
