Since 2006, I have seen African Vision of Hope do many great things for the orphans in Zambia. Zambia, in sub-Saharan African, remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Here are a few of the facts:
- 17 million AIDS orphans in the world; 15 million live in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Zambia is ravaged by HIV/AIDS, resulting in a lost generation.
- 74% of its population earning less than $1.25 a day.
- Half of the population is under the age of 14 years old.
Without parents, orphans in Zambia do not attend school because there is no one to pay their school fees. The children also do not have access to meals, receive proper health care, learn basic life skills, nor do they have hope.
I continually witness African Vision of Hope relieve suffering and share hope. They are working to end extreme poverty and bring life changing transformation. I am so proud of the accomplishments in the face of this great feat. At the end of this month, African Vision of Hope will be opening the House of Hope for girls, where 50 girls have a a place to call home. Without a place of refuge, here are a couple of things they face.
- 16.7 million girls are out of school in sub-Saharan Africa. Of this number, 9.3 million will never step foot in a classroom.
- 4 out of 10 Zambian girls will be sold into marriage between the ages of 14 and 18 (every year of education changes this reality).
- 95% of girls in the current boarding house have endured child slavery in exchange for a meal.
I am honored to be a volunteer with this organization and look forward to my next trip to Zambia to see the progress made in so many areas!
African Vision of Hope provides lasting change to children and families living in extreme poverty by providing an education, nutrition, clean water, leadership & economic skills, and medical care. An education alone can break the cycle of poverty but the addition of learning lasting skill sets creates endless possibilities in Zambia! African Vision of Hope thrives on its volunteers here in the States. Likewise, African Vision of Hope is dependent on donations ranging from school supplies to medical supplies. Volunteers and donations enable this non-profit to really focus on the children's needs.
We are so blessed as Americans to have three meals a day, clothing, and shelter and often times in our comfort, we dismiss the troubles of the world, thinking "..that is really sad, but there is nothing I can do about it." African Vision of Hope says YES, we can do something about it....one child at a time! #DoSomething! #AfricanVisionOfHope
This is a nonprofit that is guided with a Christian heart and a sincere desire to bring hope and change to some of the neediest children in our world!
African Vision of Hope is a true blessing to be a part of! They are changing the lives of kids, orphans in Zambia, saving them from extreme poverty through education. Some are becoming teachers, doctors, electricians, and whatever professional or trade they want to become to “be the change!”
I went on mission with AVOH and it changed my life to continue to help serve them by creating awareness and fundraising for the annual Gala to help provide for their mission! Our family will always be a part of this great organization!
I have been involved with African Vision of Hope for over 5 years and have seen so many lives changed through participating in their mission trips and volunteering for them on this side of the world. Last year I got acquainted with a college student who went through the AVOH schools and is now attending college in Zambia studying to be a special education teacher. There are numerous stories like this one. They are the real deal. The children they serve truly are moving to change the future of a very poverty stricken country. Over 3000 students now attend school that without this organization would not be able to. They come from the streets, many having no families or anyone to care for them. Many have been exposed to abuse, human trafficking, sickness, trauma and things we can't imagine living through. However, these children are able to thrive in our schools, where they are loved, cared for and taught the love of Jesus. It is truly a life changing organization and everyone affiliated with it is the real deal. They believe in what they are doing 100 percent.
AVOH truly is living out the mission of "doing something" about poverty in Zambia. It is amazing to see all the work that goes into the mission here on this side of the world and then go there (which I've been twice now) and see how it is truly changing lives on the other side of the world. The enthusiasm in the children who now get to go to school, have medical care and know that they are loved is amazing. With some organizations you wonder if your donation is really getting to where it is supposed to go. I can tell you that is not a problem with AVOH.
It is difficult to concisely cover all that I know and belief AVOH to be! Lives are being rescued, hearts filled with love, minds being educated, tummy’s with food in them, medical and spiritual health restored, ground turned into food! The exponential growth over this non profit over the last decade is miraculous and inspiring!!! The landscape and future of Zambia is changing for the better!!!
I have been a child sponsor since 2011 at African Vision of Hope. I have seen lives changed for over 3000 vulnerable and orphaned children who have an opportunity to get an education, have a hot meal each day, receive medical care and spiritual development. I have received letters, pictures and updates on my sponsored children and get reports on how my donations are being used. I am honored to be a small part of this organization. It has changed my heart and expanded love to reach across the world.
I learned of African Vision of Hope (AVOH) through a work colleague, who’s wife served on the board. Shortly after making a donation to AVOH, the founder of the organization, Judi Bertels, called me to personally thank me, and I though “Who DOES that??!” I’ve been donating to charities for years without ever receiving a call.
Since then, I’ve gotten to know Judi and Bob Bertels. My husband and I interact with AVOH in a few ways: we volunteered a few times, we’ve gone on a mission trip and we sponsor a college student. Through AVOH, I was able to witness people living out James chapter 1.
Why do I say that? The staff at AVOH are doers of the Word not just listeners. They “look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress” (James 1:27), by meeting very practical needs: food, shelter, medical care, a trade, and an education. By doing this, they are demonstrating God’s love through action, while they are teaching it.
In 2017 and 2018, I had the privilege of going on a mission trip. The mission team was able to visit each school, which is an Oasis of order and optimism – sitting close to an area that is neither. Each school is situated within walking distance of the community it serves – a “compound” which is a collection of randomly scattered single-room shelters with dirt floors, no water, no electricity, no sanitation. Desperate conditions that I’ve never seen in the United States. I’ve had conversations with those children that have left me completely humbled and inspired. They have lived through impossible situations, such as homelessness as a child; slavery; and chronic sexual abuse – and have learned to forgive it; overcome it; and use that experience a fuel that propels them to become doctors, teacher, and nurses. For example, I sat down with a group of girls to “teach” bible study. Fortunately, I asked them about their favorite verse and the “why” behind it. Their stories were deeply personal and painful and their insights were profound. Rather than feeling sorry for themselves, or becoming bitter, they were grateful for the opportunity to go to the school. They proved the Truth of James 1:2-3, and allowed the trials to test their faith, and produce endurance that leads to spiritual maturity.
We also sponsor a smart, determined, hardworking college student, Clothilda. In her, and in the other children that I’ve met through AVOH, I recognize that those students have the potential to change not only their own lives, but to have a much broader impact in their communities. Their experience with suffering and deplorable living conditions drive them to want change and their education through AVOH equips them to enact it.
Finally, and this is really important to me as a donor, I’m confident that the donations are being used wisely, always intended to address the area of greatest need.
God Bless! Francine
I have been sponsoring the same child for the past 8 years and have joined African Vision of Hope on a number of mission trips from 2006-2014. AVOH has been able to recognize the main sources of poverty in Zambia and faithfully create long lasting solutions for the people. It is an organization that truly empowers students and adults by giving them the resources to realize their potential. Countless lives have been changed through the power of education, safe housing, meals and more, made available through AVOH
Words could not describe the impact African Vision of Hope has made on my life and the lives of countless others. AVOH is non-profit that is not so affiliated with the numbers or statistics of who they are helping but the actual individual: as a result, the transformation of the students has literally been taken from death to life. Just by being around the volunteers of AVOH, anyone could tell how passionate they are about the children and schools this organization exists to serve. One important aspect of this organization that many overlook is the person running it. I know the CEO of AVOH on a personal level and her heart could not be more pure. A genuine compassion she has for the people makes this non-profit soar above all others.
African Vision of Hope is an incredible organization with a straightforward mission - to help orphans and widows.
Our family loves African vision of Hope! When we give to this organization, we give in full confidence that our money is going to help provide educational, medical and spiritual needs involved. We regularly receive pictures and updates on our sponsored children. Judi and the team serve with such integrity, passion and humility. We are honored to serve alongside and help bring children of Zambia out of poverty.
Many years ago, I was the one who was willing to support this ministry, but was not willing to go on a mission trip to serve in Zambia. Ignoring GOD’S call to serve in Zambia resulted in my 5th mission trip with African Vision of Hope this past August with prayers that GOD will continue to have me serve there! GOD has to break us in order grow us and he certainly did with me! To quote a mentor of mine, “ I can’t let extreme poverty continue in Zambia on my watch!” My life is forever changed by GOD and my experiences serving HIM thru African Vision of Hope, sharing hope with the Zambian people! Serving JESUS CHRIST, Chris Covinsky
African Vision of Hope houses and educates Zambian orphans who would otherwise have no chance to attend school, eat regularly, or learn about God. It's well managed, capably led, and staffed by willing volunteers. AVOH isn't just improving lives, it's saving them!
This is a wonderful organization that strives to end poverty in Zambia, Africa. They give their all to help children escape poverty and help them have hope for a future through education and through Jesus.
We learned of African Vision of Hope and began by sponsoring a child over 7 years ago through our Sunday School class. It has been amazing to watch the organization thrive under the leadership of the couple who founded it and the team they have built, as well as watching all the ways God has provided for the growth of their ministry. We have participated with the organization in several different ways and know that the biggest majority of the financial contributions we make go directly to helping the children they focus on. I have seen first hand the impact African Vision of Hope has on the lives, and the families and communities, of the children they serve. The organization has focused largely, but not solely, on educating and empowering the children, so they can become self-sufficient and the future leaders.
I am amazed at the level of commitment and accomplishment I see at African Vision of Hope. African Vision of hope is committed to bringing immediate and lasting solutions to the children of Zambia. To see where they started to present day is nothing short of a miracle. The hard work, dedication, and most of all love poured into these children is truly of God. AVOH continues to look for ways to provide food, education, clean water, developing leadership and economic skills to help break the poverty cycle and learn about God's love. I personally have joined AVOH in 4 mission trips to Zambia and the gratitude and happiness I have seen in the faces of these children is amazing. The relatives/parent of students are also grateful for a way for their children to grow and better themselves. AVOH is very responsible with child sponsorship and donations. They are great stewards of the monies given to support this work.
I am so impressed by the AVOH team, not only have they given their all, but almost all funding is given back into the program to help the children of Zambia succeed by helping them to stay in school, graduate, learn a trade and be productive people in their communities. African Vision of Hope (AVOH) allowed me and my husband to experience the love of the Zambian people and to give back what little we had to offer. These mission trips have changed our lives! AVOH has been able to provide food, water, school supplies, medicine, a school nurse, housing through the orphanage, jobs for local teachers, teaching farming so everyone can provide for their families and much more. I am impressed what they can do on so little. AVOH is to be commended in their dedication to their child sponsor program. Only $30 a month and they can provide so much, WOW
My wife and I have been associated with AVOH and its founders, Bob and Judi Bertels since the beginning. We continue to volunteer and take trips to Zambia with AVOH because they are the REAL DEAL when it comes to non-profit organizations and doing GOD's work. The kids AVOH helps are some of the poorest of the poor in the world. We have personally witnessed the conditions in Zambia and are amazed at the difference that has taken place since our first visit 10+ years ago. It only takes one time to witness the gentle smile on the face of a double-orphaned child, who you took the time to talk with, for you to realize the kids now have HOPE for their future. That, by far, makes all the work worth it!!
Integrity, compassion and accountability are hallmarks of African Vision of Hope. This organization and all of its volunteers are amazing! They are professional, personal and spiritual. They not only care about each and every child in Zambia, but they also care about the volunteers and staff on this side of the globe. I only have good words and praise to say about African Vision of Hope. I feel blessed to be a part of this amazing organization!
Awesome non-profit! I have had the opportunity to participate in a mission trip with this group and see the results personally!!!
I went on a mission trip to Zambia this summer with this group. It is GREAT to see donations that are directly serving and impacting people in need. It was awesome to see schools they have built and continue to sponsor in order for children to receive and education. It was wonderful to see a well that was built in the middle of nowhere so that people may have a clean water supply! Absolutely wonderful! :)
African vision of hope gives children with no means to help themselves a chance to educate themselves and break the cycle of extreme poverty!
Compassion in action~that's African Vision of Hope. Ending extreme poverty in Africa one child at a time~that's African Vision of Hope. Purpose driven~GOD DRIVEN. African Vision of Hope changes lives by educating, equipping and empowering our donors, volunteers and employees to educate, equip and empower children in Africa so they have a hope for their future.
