Mission: To facilitate the effective transition of African immigrants to American society and to support their sustainable integration into their new homeland.
Programs: 1. The ?Catching Up? Project assists African refugee students advance at their own pace ? both educationally, and in their cultural adjustment ? through individualized tutoring and mentoring. 2. AIRF Study Circles is a pilot project at Blair High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. It utilizes the process of the national Study Circles Program to involve students, parents and teachers in dialog for mutual understanding and increased student performance. 3. The African Council of Elders Mediation Project supports African-Centered mediation and conflict resolution approaches for refugees in schools, homes, neighborhoods, Worship and work places through referrals from legal systems. 4. The African Cultural Sensitivity Competency Training Program designed to provide African Cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, and skills to work effectively with the African community. Training is provided to care givers, employers, Law Enforcement, School Educators, Hospital personnel and to Africans themselves. 5. We provide English as a second language (ESL) classes with one of our partners, the Charles W Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity.
