Mission: The African American Heritage Preservation Foundation, Inc. (AAHPF), a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, which is dedicated to the preservation of African American history and historical sites, was established in June 1994 by E. Renee Ingram.
The Foundation was created as the result of Ms. Ingram's efforts to preserve her family's cemetery, an endangered rural cemetery, which ultimately was placed on the Commonwealth of Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The Stanton Family Cemetery was the first free African American privately held cemetery to be placed on these Registers in the country.
AAHPF has been primarily engaged in activities that include the preservation, maintenance, and awareness of endangered or little-known African American historical sites in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Regions.
In addition, AAHPF acts as a resource center for community groups, preservationists, genealogical and historical societies, not-for-profit organizations and government entities, nation-wide, needing assistance in the preservation of African American historical sites and history. The Foundation has its own web site that provides information on its activities and serves as a research tool that is used by teachers and students ranging from middle school through postgraduate studies.
Results: The African American Heritage Preservation Foundation is working with Virginia House Delegate C. Matt Fariss to implement the provisions of a House Bill that would recognize 49 historical African American graves at The Stanton Family Cemetery in Buckingham County and that The Stanton Family Cemetery be added to the list of Historical African American cemeteries cared for pursuant to § 10.1-2211.2 of the Code of Virginia. The Stanton Family Cemetery was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources has developed a Virginia Historical African American Cemetery and Graves Fund Manual that is an invaluable resource that other states can replicate for its historical African American cemeteries and grave sites.
