My encounter with Accountability Lab started at a time I almost lost all hope of growing my idea. Meeting them has transformed me as an individual and my organization. Their all-round support has enabled my organization to stand the test of time.
Accountability Lab was our first official donor and participating in the Incubator program as an accountapreneur has open the door for more funding opportunities for us. I cannot thank them enough for the support so far and I really wish they continue to get all the support they need as well so they are able to continue to support local leaders like me.
It's been an amazing experience with AL since I became a 2020 Accountapreneur. From loads of training and mentoring to resource sharing and program support, the AL team has been so supportive of my vision to make engage the public and private bodies on environmental accountability.
We wouldn't have been able to achieve what we have if we had not gotten the support of Accountability Lab.
My experience with Accountability Lab started January 2019, when i first applied and got selected for its Accountability Innovation program. The program exceeded my expectation, despite being a nursing mother, i was well treated, and never had felt any form of discrimination. these made me apply for the Lab's incubation program for the year 2020.
It was at the first ever Incubator training program. I got to know more about the program during the first incubator training workshop, help February 2020, in Abuja, F.C.T Nigeria.
The Incubator is AccountabilityLab's flagship program for young civil society leaders to build sustainable, effective tools for accountability, participation and open government. The program provides a non-prescriptive, supportive environment for creative, enterprising individuals such as I am, who bring innovative ideas to inspire accountability in their communities.
It's been a been a 5 months of hands-on, comprehensive support including: training and knowledge-building, mentoring, network building, media outreach and financial support (stipends) to help flesh my idea of promoting access to equitable, quality, low-cost primary education for vulnerable children living in rural communities of Ajaokuta L.G.A, of Kogi State Nigeria. Through the use of multifaceted approach, that includes; 1. Using technology to provide access to low cost equitable quality education, and 2. Establishing data driven accountability and transparency in the education sector for citizen participation in policy development and project implementation. It monitors government spending on education, improves access to information for and by citizens (Citizen-generated data).
AccountabilityLab Incubator program has been a personal learning journey/experience for me as a person, it has given me the love and support I need to fleshen my idea and scale my organization generally. It has also been a very tasking journey/experience for me, being a wife and mother of two active children, saddled with the responsibility of looking after my family well-being alongside running a career, but in all, the experiences has been a very positive and rewarding one.
AccountabilityLab made combining family & career roles so very easy. For example when we had our first incubator training and hotel was reserved for those of us coming from outside Abuja, it was easy for me to come with my husband and two kids who stayed at the hotel room while I was out for the training sessions, and I would check up on them at intervals during break sessions, this enabled me concentrate on the training effectively.
The program is none discriminatory, because I can testify that my status as a young mother wasn't used against me, rather I see it as an inclusion, because so many other organizations won't take a nursing mother for any of their programs.
The AccountabilityLab's Incubator program has various interesting components, which includes; The 4 quarterly Incubator training, (we have had 3 already, looking forward to the fourth one coming up in August 2020), mentoring, monthly stipends, friendraiser, network building, access to opportunities, as well as one-on-one support for projects.
Participating in this incubator program, has further strengthened my leadership capacity, I can now multitask and do alot of things, which I ordinarily wouldn't have been able to do. Through the incubator program, I have developed skills in project management, proposal writing, System thinking, organizational / human resource management. My pitching skills has been greatly improved, I am now better at report writing and communicating through storytelling.
The networking opportunity provided by Accountability Lab is second to none, and I am indeed very grateful to AccountabilityLab for this rare privilege of partaking in the 2nd cohort of the program, as a matter of fact, this is the first fellowship program I will ever attend, and it has thus far exceeded my expectations.
A Big thankyou to AccountabilityLab for the awesome privilege given to young civil Society leaders who ordinarily wouldn't have been able to achieve anything despite their great thoughts and idea.
Thank you and God bless you.
Accountability lab is working on areas that are lacking behind. They had identified all the young leaders that were working in public offices of Pakistan. The platform believes in the craziest ideas of Accountapreneure and I am one of them.
This organization is doing wonders!!!!
I find out Accountability lab only last year, but since then I see accountability lab as the breeding ground for future leaders in both civic space and government agencies. relating to Accountability lab Nigeria Office, I have seen the highest form organization I have ever seen in all the organization I had come across.
Accountability lab remains one of the exceptional Non profit organization which operates on a high level of transparency and encourages her volunteer, partners and associates to do same. Great job Accountability Lab.
Its been an amazing experience being affiliated with an organisation with very innovative and practical ideas focused on changing the narrative on integrity in governance by honoring the civil servants doing the good work. I have no doubt that Accountability Lab will go places in the near future!
A great group that delivers out-sized impact , using creative approaches and a positive engagement model
These guys are doing amazing work in Pakistan. I have been working along with them on a cause and they are very helpful.
One of the most passionate organizations working for the betterment of community in terms of accountability and integrity. An area that lacks highlight. THUMBS UP!!
I assisted the Accountability Lab with communications and storytelling for several months in 2017-18. The Lab uses a contrarian approach to tackling corruption in several poor countries. Rather than harp on depressing trends around graft and government malfeasance, it spotlights honest public servants and supports young people trying to improve their societies. The idea is to begin to raise hopes and expectations about the behavior of government workers and gradually turn the tide on corruption. I found the strategy compelling and deserving of more support and resources because of its emphasis on inspiration and hope -- ingredients lacking in typical anticorruption campaigns. I was also impressed by the organization. The Lab's founder and executive director Blair Glencorse is a great leader and visionary. I worked with many creative and talented people in the Lab's offices in Pakistan, Mali, Nigeria, Nepal and Liberia. They seemed genuinely inspired by the opportunity to work toward positive change for their countries.
I am part of their accelerator program. The most amazing things about the Lab is that it is doing a great work combining entrepreneurship and promotion of accountability. They are findings ways to make social movement sustainable and at the same time scalable. They are also not afraid to take risks by investing in start ups whose success is far from certain. For us, they not only provided financial support but also helped us network with relevant individuals and organizations and as a result our accountability related project is still going strong even after the end of financial support from them and we have been finding multiple avenues to collaborate.
With the support from Accountability Lab, we have been able to accomplish all that we did and empower young people across Nepal to take the financial future and accountable society into their own hands via financial literacy, budget literacy, and State offer program. Thank you, Team!
One of the best nonprofit that I have come across. Really proud of their initiative 'Integrity Idol' to recognize the honest and hard-working government officials.
Accountability lab is the best. It helps people in fulfilling their dreams and give them a chance to step forward in betterment of their country.
Accountability Lab is creating innovative projects to improve accountability and honesty in many countries. I have seen firsthand the projects they created in Nepal and I think they are a NGO that is very deserving of a top-rating.
Great initiative, young and innovaive organisations. It has been a awesome opportunity to work with the Accountability Lab
Having worked in the fields of international development and good governance for many years, I have been consistently impressed with the work of the Accountability Lab. It's innovative approach to incentivizing positive behavior in the areas of civil service and anti-corruption are paradigm shifting for the field. I hope to see the Accountability Lab expand into new markets in the future.
Accountability Lab is one of the most vital organizations I know, leading a generational movement for trust, accountability and transparency in governance in nascent democracies. They've taken on the difficult but necessary work of cultural change through "naming and faming" good public servants rather than "naming and shaming" bad actors.
An organization that punches above its weight. A dedicated, passionate, and energetic staff doing excellent work to support grassroots accountability efforts in several different countries. It is always an impressive surprise to learn the extent of their creative and growing initiatives.
I am a part of Accountability Lab's incubator program. Accountability Lab Pakistan chapter is doing an amazing job with youth, engaging them to promote accountability and also providing mentoring sessions to Accountapreneuers to tackle different challenges.
Accountability Lab is emerging and one of the most trusted nonprofits in Nepal working on accountability and transparency issues. Integrity Idol is one of the best products of Accountability Lab which acknowledges and encourages government officials to be transparent and accountable by naming and framing. Engagement with youths and working closely with local government units are the demonstrated expertise of Accountability Lab. I am privileged to share that I was an Accountapreneur fellow of Accountability Lab.
Accountability Lab (AB) has been working with a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers with a mission to contributing to the promotion of good governance in the country. One of its key activity is the selection of 'Integrity Leaders' from among the large mass of the public service providers. The selection process is completed by following a rigorous scrutiny of the data and information widely collected for the purpose. This has enhanced the credibility and fairness of the organization. "Integrity Leaders" have played important role to the promotion of the values like accountability,Integrity and transparency in the society.
Accountability Lab is setting the standard for Government accountability and transparency. Their programs are innovative and have achieved successful progress across different countries. I am continually amazed of the work they do.
I have been a part of Accountability Lab's accountability incubator program, they are doing really good job in Nepal to promote accountability and engage young people in this issue. Their Integrity Idol program is one of the most successful program that selects and honors civil servants, who have shown integrity in their job and help to change the system. All the best to AL.
Amazing! very inspiring and thoughtful work that the lab does. I am always fascinates about their work with young people, public servants and elected representative. I truly admit the hard work that leaders of the Lab works in Nepal to fight for accountability.
100 % in transparency in its conduct is something to count on. I am proud of being part of accountability movement and support my husband to fight against corruption in Nepal, the deadly disease of development.
I have seen Accountability Lab in action in Liberia, and they are doing great work. Public institutions which work for the people are essential to economic and social development. We need more efforts like Accountability Lab to bring that about.
Accountability Lab achieves an amazing amount of results on an incredibly low budget. It is staffed by truly dedicated team members and consistently continues to attract a high level of talent, including several volunteers who have been moved by the organization’s mission.
Accountability Lab has been recognized as a leading non-profit engaging youth leaders, citizen activists and government officials to foster the next generation of responsible leaders in their respective countries. I've had a front-row seat to the amazing locally-led creative programs that AL has developed all over the world. Its model is inspiring and engaging, and the organization has been recognized as a positive force by world leaders, global funding institutions and government officials. AL works to identify and recognize honest government officials, to incubate social enterprises, and to engage youth in civil society and voter registration through creative media such as music, photography and video. The team has an excellent understanding of local culture and priorities, engaging tens of thousands across its programs.
Accountability Lab is an innovative organization focused on one of the most difficult contemporary challenges: corruption. By mobilizing great ideas from generally young people on the ground in its target countries, AL has generated creative and effective approaches for encouraging good governance in places where malfeasance is endemic. My family contributes a modest amount to AL for its work in Mali because the impact is so clear and powerful.
I have the great pleasure of working with Accountability Lab for last several months at Pakistan. The main goal of the Lab is to build a World in which people with power are accountable. An efficient part of the Lab is to experiments of new ideas on social accountability and governance.
The goal relates to the importance of human resources development and improvement of the skills, as well as increasing the awareness and knowledge in different fields, which reflects positively on the performance of the employees and their efficiency at work.
I am really enjoying to working with Lab with nice environment and trying to do my best for it.
Accountability Lab is a great place to invest your precious time in. The work environment that you get there is full of optimism. The people working in the core team never treat you as an outcast but they treat you like a family member.
In my 4 months internship at Accountability I learned a lot of different things and met a lot of new people. The good thing is that most of the people were not from the same country so I actually enjoyed the cross-cultural work system. As the name of the organization goes, everything is transparent.
The most value thing I learned is it's not always about 'Work! Work! Work!' but you can Enjoy as well while working and that's the kind of environment I would love to have in my future.
I am one of the Accountability fellows known as Accountaprenuer from Nepal. My idea "Civic Schools", a new vision for civic education in schools was supported by Accountability Lab during initial phase and they have been continuously supporting this initiative.
With the collaboration with Accountability Lab, I have been able to work in 8 schools in 2014-2015 reaching out to approx. 800 students from 8th to 9th grade from rural and urban Nepal. The program also trained 12 young volunteers promoting action based civics. Through the program we have witnessed change in knowledge, skills and behaviour of students when it comes to participating in discussion and debate on contemporary issues, asking tough accountability questions to the school administration, critically thinking about solving school and community problems and preparing themselves for next generation leadership.
I am looking forward to working together with Accountability Lab as we continue to reach out to more needy community schools that doesn't have resources and opportunities for students to include civic education program in their schools.
I've been working as a Community Front line Associate in one of the projects of Accountability Lab in Nepal namely, 'Mobile Citizen Help Desk' a project designed and implemented within 24 hours of the massive earthquake that hit Nepal in 25th April, 2016. Its been over a year i'm involved in this project and the efforts, commitment and enthusiasm of the project team to support earthquake survivors and advocate on their behalf are simply exceptional. The simple notion of sharing earthquake related information to the quake affected communities by mobilizing local Community Front Line Associates in all of fourteen most earthquake affected districts in Nepal makes Accountability Lab stand out in the crowd as a unique and an effective Non Profit Organization at the grass root level. Accountability Lab just through this project has reached 60,000 + citizens in 750+ communities so far and continues to benefit them directly and indirectly through bridging information gap between affected communities and government/Non government stakeholders and assisting the relief providing agencies to ensure relief materials reach to the right people in right ways.
My passion and motivation to work with communities on ground is deepened by each day spent with the Accountability Lab team and now, i can say with confidence that this one year indulgence with the amazing team has taught me more than what a whole year lectures at school could ever teach me.
I've volunteered with the Accountability Lab in their DC office for over 6 months now, and I continue to be impressed by the creativeness and resourcefulness of their programs. They have made limited resources go very far and they try to continuously adapt to the changing local needs of the communities they serve in Liberia, Nepal, and now Pakistan. The leadership sets an example for being responsive to its staff and its constituents, and I have seen firsthand how they seek out feedback and then try to integrate that feedback directly into their work. They are keen to support local actors find local solutions, so ears are always open on the ground. I think they are working harder to formalize mechanisms for feedback of participants in the programs and members of the general public who come into contact with their work. As an organization, they are also very open to collaboration so I would recommend to individuals and other organizations working in these fields to reach out and brainstorm ideas for partnership.
You guys have a noble mission and I applaud you. it is a job that needs to be done and is long overdue.
Ghana Leadership Union has studied some African nations specifically Ghana, where the political structure makes it impossible to be transparent and any data donors want can be easily produced for them. Recently when we complained about not having unemployment data, they came out with a 5.2% unemployment! - better than the US and most EU nations. Why?
In nations like Ghana where most people get into politics to increase or gain their wealth, and power is centralized by the Constitution on the President to appoint all town, district, regional chief executives, as well as cabinet and agency heads, it is a joke to talk about transparency. Corruption does not allow transparency in such cases. As such donors need to evaluate the constitutions and separation of powers in a nation before their taxpayer funds are sunk into such dungeon holes.
Ghana has incurred more than $15 billion in accumulated debts from loans for such a small country over the last two or so decades, and yet highways started 20 yrs ago never get completed, potholes develop after only 2 rainy seasons, a $603 million loan and grant for Water works was never used for intended water projects and the list goes on. Electricity is at a standstill now due to fraudulent transactions where major planning and procurement are simply ignored. More than 10,000 schools were built without toilet and even where toilets were built water is a problem. The leaders simply don't care! Of course they all come to conferences in entourages, in nice suits and even private jets!
Elections by themselves do not imply democracy and accountability, and so please Western and other donor nations should do a better evaluation of the political atmosphere before they put their nations' taxpayer funds into sink holes as Ghana has been.
Of course if you give them loans and grants so your oil and gold mining companies will be given easy access, that is a different objective - and in that case don't ever call it AID. Call it facilitation of bribery, corruption, and exploitation.
“Integrity Idol Nepal 2014” is first of its kind of TV show that will be broadcasted from the national television of Nepal highlighting the integrity of 5 Nepali bureaucrats form across the country. Through a process in which any civil servants can be nominated for Integrity Idol Nepal, final 5 will be selected by a team of esteemed judges who will be featured in a TV show. Among the final 5, 1 will ultimately be entitled “Integrity Idol Nepal 2014”. General public will vote via sms and internet and one who receives the greater number of votes will be honored with the title.
When we talk about the civil servants in Nepal, there is a common mindset that they are not honest, they are not accountable and they are corrupt. The situation is that the public mistrust own government and do not have faith in rule of law.
In this circumstance, Accountability Lab has launched an idea of a TV show that will honor 1 civil servant who is honest and accountable. This is the first year of “Integrity Idol Nepal” which will be continued every year.
Nomination Form and Criteria are available in: www.facebook.com/integrityidol.

I came to know about this organization through Narayan Adhikari, country representative for Nepal at Accountability Lab. This organization is experimenting different innovative ideas to uphold accountability and transparency in Nepal. Two of the most interesting things that I have noted about this organization which even make it very unique are: first, working with young people and second, it uses strategy like 'helping people to help themselves'. This strategy will largely promote bottom up development in Nepal. I wish this organization all the very best.
I came in contact with the Lab through an article they published in Global Policy Journal, as I found their grounded approach to development through accountability very convincing and close to my own understanding as a development studies scholar. I volunteered for them for several months and learned so many useful things about corruption, transparency and grounded development work. The staff is both highly professional and passionate, very pleasant characters to work with.
Great mission ! the only way to tackle corruption is through engaging youth as driving force. Give citizen a tool rather than aid and structure that are not sustainable. Work with government to support them to develop creative mechanism to access information and resource to people for wise decision.
With the latest CPI of Transparency International, my country Nepal ranks 116 deeply engulfed by systematic, political and petty corruptions. It’s definitely not a good remark and is affecting almost all the walks of life morally and economically.
Accountability Lab raised an enthusiasm in me that it will enable and enlighten me to take a practical and commitment stand against corruption prevalent in my scenario.
The outstanding theory and practice course modules that focus over the public sector, the private sector and civic empowerment tools against corruption seems action oriented.
Generally youths are so vocal and at the same time they hardly participate in anti-corruption campaign directly in Nepalese Society. AL in Nepal created a platform which is helping to bring general public (i.e. especially youths) in anti-corruption campaign. The people who are involved in this group are awesome because they are so motivating. In my personal case, I also don't like to be part of corrupted society but I hesitate to come up with a voice against it. "Bolau" in Nepal is a platform which, first of all, encouraged me to have my 'say' and secondly it combines voices of people together which even more motivate us. And finally, our voice is being LOUDER day by day. Hope our voice will be more louder and be heard which will help us and lead us to create corruption-less society.
Innovative organization with inspired staff and volunteers! Support for this organization is direct support to local improvements.
While working in developing society of Pakistan and struggling with our accountability and anti-corruption efforts, we have always looked upon Accountability Lab to develop, test and promote tools that can be adopted in our unique social settings. I am deeply inspired by their dedication towards empowering grassroots communities and promoting their inclusion into decision making process. It is because of organizations such as accountability lab that downtrodden sections of the societies everywhere are encouraged to find ways to demand good governance, improved service delivery, and better access to public services. They are not only contributing a great deal towards promoting responsible citizenship, but also towards more transparent, efficient and accountable governments.
The Accountability Lab is doing great work! I spent the summer working in Liberia with the Lab and it really renewed my faith in non-profit work. The Lab is genuinely attempting to effect grassroots change and is primarily concerned with local ownership of the process. This is a crucial step in the development process that often gets sidelined. Issues of accountability are often discussed in broad terms when referring to government or institutions but the Accountability Lab really focuses on spreading the message of individual accountability first and foremost. There need to be more organizations out there like the Accountability Lab doing good work daily whilst maintaining a sustainable long-term vision in mind!
we guys amazing ! keep up the good work on developing new tools generate citizen engagement on issues they concern about .Use of modern technology is a power tool to make social change but think about how you reach out to the large number population who have no access to technology, skill and awareness.
Good luck !
I have been aware of the Accountability Lab's work in Nepal and Liberia. The Lab's work are intended in the areas of most need for changing the development pace of developing countries. I believe there are abundant resources which are poorly utilized or mis-utilized by authorities in developing countries. If individuals and authorities are brought into a accountability framework, half of the problem gets solved and countries start to flourish. This is where Accountability Lab is focusing its work and for this reason it is going to be a shift in the area of local development and international aid paradigm. This will change the aid culture of ' money from the poor people of rich countries to the rich people of poor countries'.
Again accountability encompasses individuals to authorities, and this is about developing a culture where impunity has no room, individuals involved in corruption will be served justice.
I usually see Accountability Lab's activities in Nepal. The way they engage young people in finding key solutions of the social problems is amazing. The use of arts, music, and sports are very powerful tools to engage citizen on holding politician, government and private sector accountable.
