This newspaper has been a source of current and historic information about my neightborhood and the Latino artistic, social and political climate. One of the best things about the paper is the community it creates. Volunteers and staffers become family while working together on mutual interests and goals. The paper creates and aura of impowerment and promotes fun and faith in others! I am not currently a volunteer because I just finished school (again). I have been associated with the paper since I was about 18 years old. I am now 52!!

Programs: Community media program: accion latina's oldest and most prominent media product is el tecolote newspaper, a free biweekly, bilingual print and online publication that provides bay area latino communities and other readers with local news often not covered by the mainstream media. In 2014 el tecolote published 25 free, bilingual print issues with a circulation of 10,000 during 2014. Our mostly volunteer staff of reporters, translators and photographers produced 191 articles with photos chronicling current events, cultural life, accomplishments of, and challenges experienced by latinos in the bay area and latin america. arts and culture program: in 2014 our audience numbers grew from 4,575 in 2013 to 10,980 in 2014. Three of the 12 events were free to the public. A sampling of the events we produced include the first ever sounds from the streets: a historical and musical celebration of latin rock; the 33rd annual encuentro del canto popular, and the 2nd annual latino/a life in the bay photo contest and exhibit. youth program in 2014 san francisco state universitys multimedia department won a $35,000 micro-grant in the first round of the $1m challenge fund for innovation in journalism education to develop and pilot a mobile- and web-based guide for reporters through the news gathering process. The newspoints app connects and organizes interviews, notes, sources, data and multimedia by assignment, topic, time and geography. Accion latinas community media program (el tecolote) serves as the community-based laboratory for the project. , enabling young adults to gain on-the-ground journalism skills and knowledge.
