Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education, Homeless & Housing, Homeless Centers, Human Services, Primary & Elementary Schools, Special Education

Mission: For kids, homelessness isn?t just about where you lay your head at night; it?s also about where your mind is during the day at school. Homeless children are twice as likely to repeat a grade. They are subject to frequent moves and gaps in enrollment and are twice as likely as their housed peers to become sick. Nearly half of homeless children suffer from untreated emotional issues. Confidence diminishes and anxiety rises as an unstable home life takes its toll. School is sometimes the only normal part of a homeless child?s life. Support from ACP means homeless children wear clothing and shoes that fit to class, get needed medical care, receive the attention of a caring tutor, and carry the same school supplies as the other kids. These and other services provided by ACP allow homeless children to focus on their homework and learning, not on feeling alienated and being left behind in their schoolwork. The number of homeless students attending Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools (CMS) has more than doubled in the last two years to more than 2,200. A Child''s Place is the only CMS partner working specifically with homeless students, earning the support of Superintendent Peter Gorman and senior CMS administrators.
