Mission: Vallejo Inter Tribal Council was founded ten years ago in response to the sense of isolation many modern day urban Native Americans feel, the lack of pride in our own heritage, and our inability to join the mainstream of modern culture. It is now evident to many of us that we must regain as much of our native culture as possible, in order to feel human again, while at the same time educating ourselves and our children in the mysterious ways of a world where money is god and tolerance for other people is superficial at best. Our intent has been to provide a culturally diverse safe place, while at the same time providing badly needed services, such as parenting classes and alcohol and drug abuse classes. The necessity for more programs is apparent. Computer training and access, job training, and proper nutrition and exercise programs will eventually be instituted, as well as continuation of past programs involving families and children. The Annual Pow Wow, a source of pride and community for our group, and very well received by many others, will continue. We continue to expand our community outreach, and hope to include more events that will educate and bring together our small community with the larger community we have been assimilated into.
