Here's a description of what the 3d Battalion, 11th Marines (3/11) Foundation does: Their mission is to aid wounded Marines: to continue to support the Marine Wounded Warrior Detachment at the San Antonio Military Medical Center ( SAMMC); and to seek additional opportunities to help wounded Marines of every generation. Marine Wounded Warriors are defined as combat and non-combat wounded, ill and injured Marines; Sailors attached to Marine units; and their family members. it is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation with NO paid staff and an all-volunteer Board.
I learned of them because retired Marines who served in the 3d Battalion, 11th Marines have been having reunions fora number of years. It began with some 3/11 Marines who served together in 'Nam. My husband was one. When they held a reunion in San Antonio, they learned of the needs of these young Marines who were hospitalized at SAMMC. They visited them & noted how spartan everything was. Not like home, that's for sure. Our retirees began helping where they could.
The foundation members look for ways to aid these wounded warriors & their families who try to be near them while they are healing. There are lots of cracks where the government & military don't see outside the box & needs & kindness & care for the spouse & children can go a long way to ease the burden of worry on our young troops.
