Programs: Youth development: after-school homework help & mentoring: promote comprehensive development of students with the goal of developing leaders who will be tranformative agents in their own neighborhoods. Provide year-round mentoring for 10 students in middle school and high school who live in at-risk neighborhoods, and are vulnerable to drugs, crime, truancy, and teen pregnancy. Our 2:52 after-school program completed its third year with 10 students. This program provides individualized educational instruction, in conjunction with benchmark standards, for students reading below the fcat minimum. It also focuses on developing student character, economic competence, and leadership skills.
annual family fall festival: during the 5th annual family fall festival 2nd mile worked with 8 neighborhood nonprofit organizations, 10 churches, and 100 plus volunteers for a successful event with over 800 guests, including the children and youth we serve and their families. The objective of the annual family fall festival is to build local leadership as we seek to provide a safe and healthy halloween event for our community residents. This event also provides awareness regarding local agencies that are able to provide assistance and support to families in their efforts to prevent gang activity, teen pregnancy, truancy, illiteracy and crime.
summer day camp: provide recreational, artistic, music, educational, and character development activities for 65 students in order to create alternatives to drug and gang involvement; help to develop discipline among students and promote students' overall health - physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially - through four weeks of summer day camp, held five days a week for four hours a day. The 5th year of summer day camp was led entirely by local core volunteers under the direction of the 2nd mile staff. The camp provides a very low cost alternative for parents who cannot afford day camps normally, parents who have to work, or parents wanting to be involved in their children's education and development.
